| My Wife and I put in an offer on a house and had a radon test done. The radon test came back high. My concern is that a couple of my kids were going to be staying in the basement. How serious is Radon? I don't think I could live with myself if later on down the road one of the kids got lung cancer. |

Wikipedia - Radon
.
. Radon gas from natural sources can accumulate in buildings, especially in confined areas such as attics, and basements. It can also be found in some spring waters and hot springs.[2] Epidemiological evidence shows a clear link between breathing high concentrations of radon and incidence of lung cancer. Thus, radon is considered a significant contaminant that affects indoor air quality worldwide. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the second most frequent cause of lung cancer, after cigarette smoking, causing 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the United States.[3] . . |
| I bought the curiculum for Radon license both for testing and mitigation....oh GAWD soooo boring, but it breaks down like this: It's damage is cummlitive to the lungs but can be mitigated with an exhaust system in the basement or crawl space........need more info for a better answer than that.... |

All I know is that radon is very, very radioactive and produces cancer-causing ionizing radiation. Just a little is bad. |

I'm sorry I don't, but the radon guy said it was at the low end of actionable. I wasn't taking chances. It's nasty stuff. |

Yeah, that's the big controversy, it's REALLY hard to find non smokers (1st or 2nd hand) to test over the long term and quantify as Radon caused cancer.... BTW OP, how high was high?I can check my books for effects or at least give you another opinion. |

Lol. You got dogpiled by folks who got suckered into spending thousands on fancy radon removal systems. |

I been sleepin all night my hands grew another finger There's radon in my home and it's here to linger My baby's come and she's got the answer To why along with my mortgage came lung cancer When she is coughing cause the levels are too high She sighs and holds me close cause we're all gonna die But we don't need no lungs at all! I'm an expert in this particular field and consult on radon removal systems. For a small fee I'll help you out. Once a day, open the windows and air out the basement for a few minutes. There. That'll be $300, please. Excellent advice. What do I do when it's -20 with a -60 windchill?

The funny thing about asbestos is that it's not anything inherent in the substance itself that causes cancer, it's the fact that it produces airborne fibers of a particular size. Within a certain size range, most anything the body can't break down will cause cancer. Asbestos is really good at producing stuff in that size range. The problem is that we've gone full retard with asbestos. The permissible limits have decreased to the point that it's not about safety anymore, it's about generating violations. They're doing the same with mercury and lead now, and they're doing it with asbestos law as a guide. Because it's clearly not about safety in the real world, the regulations lose their force as an implied warning of danger, and are instead seen as the environmental equivalent of speed trap revenue generation. Yay EPA. |

Were it not for smoking and radon (a far distant second), lung cancer would be a rare cancer. My dad (smoker) died of lung cancer, so I did some research at the time.
In some areas of the country, radon is not even an issue. I believe that some areas of PA were among the worst. It's natural, and about 9 times heavier than air, which is why unventilated basements are the real problem. (not sure why wiki claims it'll be in the attic) It's hard to apply a probability to getting negative health effects if exposed for long durations. Bad effects are not guaranteed, but are a shitload more probable than if no radon is present. |

Where as millions of people across the nation have basements, it's apples and oranges. Less easy to correlate people who get lung cancer with so many different variables. I'm not saying Radon doesn't cause cancer. Fuck, just plain Oxygen you breath in has carcinogens. I'm saying from what I've been told, it's not nearly as big of an issue as the recent hype machine has made it out to be. |

Yay EPA. I've read that the reason asbestos causes cancer is that its crystalline structure causes it to separate into fibers that are as small as one molecule thick, and these atomic needles can poke and damage individual DNA molecules, just as the atom-sized wavelength of gamma radiation can damage individual DNA molecules. Bigger needles, or bigger wavelengths, just tend to destroy DNA. It's like poking tiny holes in something vs just smashing it with a hammer. |

That is a really good article. Gives lots of good facts and let's you decide. My understanding of it is that radon is dangerous but probably not at household levels. However there is enough unknown that there is still cause for concern.
