DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Anti-piracy officials say U.S. commandos have captured four suspected pirates who boarded a Japanese-owned oil tanker off the coast of Oman.

A statement by the international anti-piracy task force says the 24 crew members on the MV Guanabara took refuge in a protected part of the vessel after reporting they were under attack Saturday.

A special unit from the destroyer USS Bulkeley boarded the tanker Sunday and detained the suspected pirates about 328 nautical miles southeast of Duqm in southern Oman.

The statement said no shots were fired and the merchant crew was not harmed.

The Bulkeley is part of an Bahrain-based multinational flotilla fighting piracy from Somalia

I got to sit in on 6 months of 6th Fleet briefings on anti-piracy ops. Not once was there discussion about releasing pirates. Transferring them to another nation for trial? Yes. Release? No.

IN a followup story

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Anti-piracy officials say the bodies of four pirates were found floating in the water off the coast of Oman.  All four suspected pirates were shot in the back of head.

A statement by the international anti-piracy task force says the 4 pirates were previously captured by US Commandos but were released as a good will gesture.  The pirates were given a boat, as well as food and supplies to get back to their home port.  It is unknown what possibly could have happened to them after their release from US custody.

The incident is being investigated by the UN Human Rights Commission.

USS gettysburg got an "imbed" for awhile.  the boarding teams were always complaining about how theyd catch a group of them then have to release them for "lack of evidence".  probably not unlike our catch and release terrorist program.

How long until they're brought here and become a burden upon the US taxpayer one way or another?

Does anyone really think there's "little to no chance" that they might be acquitted by a teary-eyed jury after testimony that these poor, impoverished young black men have no other way to support their families, they're only teenagers, someone else made them do it... and then they start applying for asylum, Social Security, Section 8 housing, food stamps... and then visas to "visit home"?

Execute them.  Shoot them in the head, toss them off the fantail, and hose off the blood and brains.  Then go looking for more pirates.  Anything else is encouraging more piracy.

It's nice and all, but it's not exactly a scalable model for defeating piracy. The pirates probably have a larger loss rate from routine maritime accidents, and the standard of living for the pirates will probably increase significantly in US federal prison.

I note that piracy was pretty much defeated in the late 19th and early 20th century, and has made a resurgence in the early 21st century. An international law system that can't defeat piracy is no damn good.

they saw them throwing weapons overboard..  or hiding within a group of refugees.  hell, there was one occasion where they were in custody then had to take them back to their skiff which had gear that a simple fisherman wouldnt have.

ak47's and rpg's?  the refugee boat where the "suspects" hid, had a couple rpg rounds stashed on it.   its a "which one of these things does not belong". i would assume/hypothesize that like infantry in afghanistan knowing taliban when they see them after dealing with it for a time, the boarding teams would know a pirate when they see it and their tactics to avoid capture.

Again, it's not illegal.

Having been a boarding officer, I know a little about it. I've been on ships that had AKs on them. We didn't bust them for the AKs, we busted them for violating UN resolutions.

They're a reason why those individuals weren't taken into custody. Because there was no legal authority to do so. It's not like they were caught committing a crime and let go.

Having heavy weapons at sea isn't lillegal, either.  Under the circumstances one needs to have good evidence at minimum that they were a' pirating.  It is difficult outside of catching them in the act.

too much shooting and no killing.  comes from the chain of command that answers to politicians, but it is the problem.

all these jerks need to be shot and dumped overboard.  no chance to surrender.

should be reported as:   US military took back a pirate captured ship after a shoot out.  there were no pirate survivors.   burials were as sea.

I would have no problem in the current situation if the pirates gave up immediately upon being aware US commando's were coming aboard.   They should be taken alive.

Once you take there weapons, mark their foreheads with non removable ink (Tattoo), finger print, photo, bleed them for intelligence, and release.

No reason to prosecute and make them fat on our resources.   Send them back as failures.

On the other hand, if once aboard they are still holding weapons, they should be killed instantly, no negotiations.

If a hostage situation developes, negotiations should only be conducted by SEALS (DEVGRU), never FBI.  Remember, we are not going to prosecute.

Only if they kill someone will they be prosecuted if taken alive.  Turn them over to the host (ship) country for prosecution.  In this case Japan.

IMHO
