I've given out memberships before for my computer problems that were solved.

Specs: Windows XP SP3, Asus A8V Mobo, GPU: Asus HD3850 AGP

Problem: Unable to install videocard drivers and "Display Adapters" doesn't show up on in device manager. I've tried manually selecting the GPU driver file and going through the wizard. I've tried different versions of the drivers. Basically it says the file has installed yada, yada, yada, but when I look in dxdiag it's the vanilla vga.dll that's installed.

Please help.

If multiple people post the correct solution, the first correct wins. I buy the membership as soon as I verify it's working correctly

1     Did this video card ever work correctly, or is this a new build

2     Did you uninstal ALL video drivers, before trying to re-instal?

it may be a hardware issue, I'm curious as to why it doesn't display in the device manager.

in the manager do you see anything that has a yellow exclamation point by it? if so that may be your device. if not, I would consider reseating the videocard.

if you see a yellow exclamation point you can try right clicking on it and installing or updating the driver automatically that way.

Open Device Manager > View Menu > select: Show Hidden Devices.

If you have the same condition I had you will find duplicate and phantom

devices listed. Phantom devices would be for the old hardware that no longer

exists. I carefully (always research and verify) removed all the phantoms,

then either determined which duplicate was not needed or removed both

devices and loaded the drivers fresh.

I suspect that you will have a phantom video adapter that is blocking your

attempts.

The above s/w will verify the type of video card you have

You might have to go into safe mode, un-install the old video card s/w - and re-install

Another option to see if the video card is working as expected download and burn an ISO of fedora

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD#Download_and_Create_Live_image_or_LiveUSB

if the video mode kicks in correctly - you should have good hardware - if it don't - well, could just mean that they don't have good video card support.

Often I keep a spare 100 dollar video card around to help check out computers.

If this helps - give the membership to someone else

Driver sweeper isn't free. I installed it (demo) and will only let you remove six entries at a time. No beans.

Yes it did. Screwed up during a supposed driver update. Why would I build new with AGP?

Yes.

What specifically should be uninstalled in safe mode (or rather, what should I use to uninstall it)?

Just pop the card out and boot it up, BIOS will drop it, then snap back in and boot it up and see if it will take the currently known good driver.

Back up important files, then re-install from recovery disc/ partition. Sometimes you can't go back to the happy days...

If it doesn't work, your video card is fried.

I usually just removed any darn thing I could find concerning previous card, shut down, pulled old card, installed new, then fired it back up and took it from there. Sometimes I would just force an update and see if XP figured out there was a new card that required a new driver. Also, when all else fails, disable or shut down anti-virus. Rinse, repeat.

I'm not sure what it  was previously...8.11 maybe?

I tried installing the 8.12 with hotfix catalyst when I screwed up. No ATI icon in the tray (there used to be).

I've tried 8.54 as well. They all say they install, but are not when I look up my drivers in DXDIAG.

A couple things...
In "F:\ATI\Support" I have these folders all listed:
10-12_agp-hotfix_xp32_dd_ccc

10-12_xp32_dd

10-12_xp32_dd_ccc_ocl

11-1_agp-hotfix_xp32_dd_ccc
How do I get rid of all that shit?
When I go to add/remove programs there are only two ATI entries:
ATI AVIVO Codecs

ATI Catalyst Install Manager
Also I searched for ATI and looked at the most recent install of the driver you linked
This is what's in the 'CX109805.inf' (setup information) folder...if it helps:

Looks like the AGP cards didn't get much ATI/AMD support. I suggest using the Asus released driver that you can find here.

seems that something fouls up the cpu to apg2/3 driver, and it needs to be uninstalled then reinstalled.
