There are a lot of people here with a lot of military experience and a lot of history buffs too. So I want to start a conversation about the subject of combat unit organization. What are some of the competing approaches? How is it done today and how was it done in the past?  How did other nations organize their units in WWI and WWII?

I understand, for example, that the Marines used to use “Sections” of about 12 men or so instead of a “Squad” of about 10 men, at least for a while. I know that it’s standard to have a squad broken up into two equal fire teams. But someone once told me that the Germans in WWII used lopsided fire teams with one light machine gun team for one fire team and several riflemen for the other fire team.

In mechanized units where does the IFV come in. Is it considered part of the squad?

What kind of weapons does a weapon’s platoon have?

And, if you were forming your own Legion of Terror, how would you organize it?

I’m pretty much interested in anything people can tell me about the subject. I’m going to pretty much shut up and hopefully let a lot of people share their wisdom.

That depends, what is this legoin of terror's purpose?  Terrain?  Engagement distances?  Can they call for fires or are they on their own?

For an overall approach, the way the Army is set up is pretty good to go in my opinion.  However, there are just too many variables to consider to create the "ultimate" legion.  It all depends on how are you fighting, what time period, who are you fighting, what kind of kit you have, etc.
