A few months ago it stopped sending/receiving mail and told me t compact folders, delete messages etc.

why is there a limit to how much f'ing mail I can have.

so 6 months ago i deleted a whole bunch of messages and that did squat.  then I deleted ALL messages, also did nothing.  so I googled it and found a way to go to the registry and deleted some folders that save old mail and from that point on, I could send and received but it wouldn't save sent messages.

and now it's giving me the same message again.
can't send or receive.

is there a better program or a way around this????

Is IMAP possible with your mail provider?

IMAP basically means that your messages are all stored on the server, and you'd be using Thunderbird just to view them.  That means there's no "compacting" to deal with, and no worrying about losing your messages if you reformat or replace your computer.  Who is your email provider?

thanks!
I'm gonna look into that on monday,
for now I backed up my profile using mozbackup and deleted every single mail file in my local folders.
I also checked off 'compact automatically when it saves 150k'.
