I have recently developed a taste for MMA. What channel do they play this on? I know nothing about the sport, only that I like it |
| UFC does PPVs, Spike and Verses show free ufc events sometimes and wec/ufc best of type shows. Bellator is now on mtv2. HDnet shows mma also. Strike Force is on Showtime either big events or the challengers shows. Spike also shows the ultimate fighter reality show and the best of pride |

PRIDE was what got me into it, then the "culture" drove me out Look for old PRIDE fights, sometimes they come on Fox Sports. (I dont know if they still do or not) |

A high percentage of these guys are intelligent men who either left a normal career or split their time between the two jobs. They're just normal people. XCR, someone's probably already mentioned it, but Spike and Versus are the two main channels for UFC/WEC stuff. Wednesdays usually have a few hours dedicated to it. |
|
As said before, Spike plays Prelim fights (fights not on the main card) before a UFC PPV. They also play old fights, and will occasionally play full, new PPVs.
Showtime has Strikeforce, but I don't know the schedule for that. HDNet (I think that's what it's called) plays a lot of fight cards from Japan (Dream, Sengoku, etc.) Versus plays old WEC fights and will occasionally have new UFC events. HDNet!
If you want to see lots of MMA, you need to have HDNet. Recently they even signed a deal with UFC so they can show video of fights during their MMA talk/news show; Inside MMA w/ Bas Rutten and Kenny Rice. If you don't get the channel it is on the web to download. They have an MMA interview show called Fighting Words W/ Mike Straka. Pretty decent. Start watching as much HDNet MMA coverage as you can, and youll start to learn more than you can on Spike. Not to diss UFC or Joe Rogan, or anyone else involved. (*HDNet also has lots of high def Tits & Ass shows. Check out Art Mann Presents.) |

It is kinda like violent chess, except there are more moves and they can be done at the same time so there is an OODA element to it. |

Hdnet is your best bet for good variety. They also play K1 (kick boxing) which I have grown to enjoy for more than MMA.
Showtime plays Strikeforce. In general I prefer StrikeForce to the UFC but that is largely because of Overeem, Fedor, and Barnett. They also do cross over events with Dream so you get a more international flair. Spike plays UFC stuff. Prelims, older PPVs, The Ultimate Fighter, and occasional free fight nights. Then there is PPV. UFC does by far the most of these the only down side being the card is not always great. Considering they try to do about one a month in addition to the free fight night and such it is a given that all the fight cards will be equal. With Strikeforce they tend to do fewer events like this which means their PPVs are almost always big ticket. They did have a deal for free fights on CBS but there has not been one since the post fight brawl in the cage that happened at the last one. If you hang around good fans to watch the fights then you can avoid a lot of the duechiness. Folks who train are generally a pretty good bet. Owning an MMA gym I have learned that for the most the shit talkers are unwilling to actually train and learn. If you go to a larger live event you will learn just how much American fans boo at fights, the TV presentation of the booing is really played down. I have come to suspect that American fans, for the most part, don't like MMA but would prefer Kick Boxing and/or Judo since the only things that actually get the crowd cheering are strikes and throws. SAMBO might be more up their alley since the ground portion of a SAMBO match is limited to quick subs or a they get back up.* *Not knocking American fans, just think that it is a lack of exposure to other fight sports that they may enjoy more. |

Strikeforce doesn't have as deep a talent pool like the UFC's, but they seem to pull off the more exciting shows I think it has a lot to do with the difference in event frequency. SF does few shows so that the ones they do have are more exciting. UFC does about a show a month even if they don't have a great card. I also think SF has a larger percentage of exciting fighters on their roster. While not as deep a roster as the UFC every event has people you want to see. There are quite a few UFC cards that I could care less about with lots of 'who gives a shit' fights. That's not to say the UFC does not have a lot of really talented guy, they just have lots of guys who are not gonna be the next big talent that shows can get diluted with sometimes. |

Fedor just got retired by a mongoloid. Make sure you throw that out when chatting MMA at work. It was almost painful to watch. There were some good fights during that whole program. +1 I am a long time Fedor fan and it was sad to watch it. That said I am really excited to more of Silva. A man that size who has some real skills should be interesting. Especially since, unlike Brock, he does not wince away from strikes. |

That and the amount of respect that he showed to Fedor when it was over. Say what you will, both men have class. |

watched some WEC on Versus last night, thanks to a member's heads up about it ![]() I watched it, too. As far as the little guys go, my two favorites to watch are Urijah Faber and Joseph Benevidez; I think neither of them were on last night. They are tough dudes and just awesome to watch, especially Faber. He seems like a very funny, intelligent fellow. |

He isn't much good at the grappling or submission holds, but he's got some nasty swinging arms and powerful legs. |

Try looking up Pancrase, shoot fighting, Vale Tudo, and the older UFC. There are some extremely skilled, disciplined athletes in MMA. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqp_35PWMpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNw_ya7wkdM I don't think so. Especially look at 3:15 and 3:45 in the second vid. Dude was bad news when he was on his game. He made the great Wanderlei look like an amatuer with the "running dog". |
