i bought a 4ch DVR "surveillance" do hickey,,

its a qsee..    first things first   i got it with a giftcard I won at work,, and i must say  its not the best..  but it was free to me so im not gonna complain much..

my question is..

I want to view this thing remotely,

its too far    from my router to run a cable.. from the box to the router,,

I do however have a desktop i use for the same thing,, < and WOW the image quality is 10x better with the same cameras.. but again   it was "free" to me  and ive been wanting one for a while so again,,, not gonna complain too much about it,,, >

i want to know if i can connect the cat5 cable from the DVR to the cat5 slot in that desktop and use it to get net access that way  ..

can that be done ?  I am trying to avoid buying more stuff < ran out of gift card > if i can avoid it

and here is the required MSpaint

lazy and i went over by 15 bucks on the giftcard..   ive spent all I  want to spend out of my own money on this..

thats really what it boils down to..

and im sure it can be done...  so why spend more...

edit

to answer your question..

from the router to the existing comp...   about 100 feet,,    thats a straight line measurement.. still need to factor in enough cable to have it not seen and i dont wanna play the tuck away game.. i have net access 6 inches from it on the existing comp.

No, its just that there is a forum for this and GD doesn't give a fuck about your network.

You want to use your computer like a router? (to split your internet connection between 2 or more devises)
Not sure how that would work
It may be possible, but configuring it may be a major pain in the ass for your average idiot

Why don't you just plug it in and see if it works.
Take a lot less time than waiting for an answer here, and a lot less abuse, too.
BTW, I can't answer your question or I would.

EXACTLY,,,   the comp gets its net access from wifi... and im asking if it can use its Ethernet connection to handoff/share  / give the new connected device an IP address

thats exactly what im asking

what you're suggesting is possible.  i wouldnt do it myself though.

you can start ICS on the host box and share internet with whomever via its connection over wifi.

Not sure of your tech level, but you could look at something like a wireless bridge for your DVR. You have two problems, getting it an IP address, and getting it enough bandwidth. I don't think just running a DHCP server will give it enough bandwidth.

Buy a wireless access point, it connects to the wi-fi and gives you a network jack to plug your DVR into.

Some routers offer this as an option in the firmware, an option similar to "Use as access point", where you'd enter the info to log onto the wireless net.

As for speeds, make sure you are using Dual Band N, as fast as wired for only a couple systems.

The range is not limited by the range of your antenna, but by the gain of his.

You can try plugging it in and enabling Internet Connection Sharing on your Wifi card. Might work...

Yeah.  I want it whatever it is.

OP, you didn't put in enough information about what you are doing, why you are doing it, and how you expect it to work.  DVRs are "dumb" devices that will not give you much option.  You are much better off using a repeater or bridging point, or you know, running a wire.  We all could be too lazy to figure out how to do it, just like you are too lazy to run wire.

Easy if you got a newish version of Windows... Plug wire into ethernet port on computer from DVR (cable will have to be a crossover cable). Go into the network connections and highlight both the local connection and the wireless connection. Right click one of them and select "Bridge Connections". It should work.

Have the same exact setup at the FiL model home.

i use an app on my phone to output GPS data via bluetooth to my laptop and into inSSIDer. I have it disabled in the screen shot.
