So, I have a paper due.
I'm curious as to why some of you believe interracial dating is an especially racist moment? How does dating disturb families and cultural norms? I do not expect you guys to write the paper and am not being lazy, I'm just curious for some input. I already have:
Edit-These perspectives were not of my own doing, or assumed of ARFCOM. They were taken from a book written in the mid-90's about race and its effects on society and the stories in it were written by people who experienced these issues SOMETIME in their lives, not necessarily recently. Please let me know if any of these don't make sense or if you have suggestions for improvement also. Thanks, |

Culture is not static. "Races" have been mixing since the dawn of history. It's a natural process. No one can point to an "ethnic" Egyptian anymore. No doubt their descendants exist, but they've been so mixed with Greeks, Arabs, and others that you couldn't identify them as such. |

How do you know what "some of you" believe? Seems pretty presumptuous to me. ![]() I meant, I already have from my readings from the story in question. Quoted:
You've been here long enough to know better than to post this in GD. I wanted it in GD, the more differing opinions I get the better my paper will be (At least, that is what I hope to believe). |

People are creatures of habit.
They like what's familiar. Which is why they usually date people who look like them. When they date people who look different, other people get upset. Then they meet the person who is "different", get to know them... and usually everything is Cool and the Gang. Sometimes they don't... but those people are jerks, so we don't talk to them. runcible gets an A+. |

Yes, this is a good point and something I am learning about in World Civ. However, for the sake of this argument we should just use the generally accepted races, like you see on the Census information: Black, White, Latino, Asian Pacific Islander, etc, etc. |

Are you 100% certain you didn't just make that up? The more posts by EvanWilliams I read, the less I am impressed by him. I'm pretty sure he's a habitual liar, or at the very least, a very bad braggart. |

My wife and I are an inter-racial couple with a mixed race child and we both agree your a dumb ass for posting this in the GD. Both of your opinions have been noted, and also discarded. Quoted:
What kind of bogus class requires you to waste time on something like that? Are you in college? Do something with your life and get a science major. I am in college. And I am in the process of acquiring a B.S. in Computer Science. I am a network administrator currently. I don't really care to spend my life on these essays but my uber-liberal English teacher has made it a requirement. |

Most of the time successful marriage comes from marrying someone of similar background in as many areas as possible. One is ethnicity. But not the only one. |

well..... how about sometimes interracial dating(not long term relationships) are in fact the most racist. As in wow I have a black boyfriend how cool am I? personally if you're in it for the right reasons who cares I've thought about including that as well as examples of people dating interracial-ly just to rebel against parents. Quoted:
As a guy in an interracial marriage, I'm still trying to figure out WTF an "especially racist moment" means. So far, all I've got is a guess that it's better than an especially racist hour, but worse than an especially racist second. I believe he defines it as: a moment that is usually more racially sensitive than a common encounter of an interracial activity (work, school, etc.) |
| Not this again. Today, most folks don't give a rats anus if your date is of a different race than you are. I have a hard time thinking of someone I know who is white who sees it as a big deal. I can easily think of 4 or 5 folks who are of African decent who see it as a big deal. |

[•Families with interracial couples will usually be forced to have the company of another race in their presence. The person of another race will most likely have to develop a more than cordial relationship with the other person. This could cause them to "watch their mouths" or act differently than they would if the significant other was of the same race.]
There are both black and asian family members in my family and my wife's family. I have never seen or heard about anybody acting differently or needing to watch their mouth at gatherings or reunions. Everyone is treated as 'family'. |

I don't live a sheltered life. I realize myself that society today is nowhere near as racist in the past. But the book in question was written in the mid-90's and from a mid-90's perspective. WHY my teacher chooses not to update the required reading materials is beyond me and out of my control

wow so much stupidity and assumptions from the OP what the fuck do you mean "some people"? i do give you credit for another good troll thread ![]() The assumptions in the OP were from a story written by someone else and paraphrased. |

Quoted: I know plenty of mixed race couples who were married in the 90s. That was only a big deal in the 90s down in some hillbilly hollow.Quoted: Are you attending Stormfront U? [/ul] I married an asian women, the first of her family born here. She is much more American-ized than most her family, especially the ones that were born in Laos. However I don't think marrying me was "assimilating" her in any way. That process started when her family moved here 30 years ago. Interracial marriage may accelerate this, but certainly isn't the cause. Certainly some culture is kept, but an equal amount is lost in the process. We have 2 children and 1 on the way, and I don't think anyone treats them different. However I think White/Asian mixes are a bit more cushioned than most mixes. I can imagine some combinations would have different outcomes. I will say that I do not watch my mouth around her family. They say shit about white people, I say shit about asian people. We all have a good laugh and no one takes it personally. |

I agree...that can make a big difference. As well as how much exposure to modern society the family members have. |
