So, I have a paper due.

I'm curious as to why some of you believe interracial dating is an especially racist moment? How does dating disturb families and cultural norms?

I do not expect you guys to write the paper and am not being lazy, I'm just curious for some input.

I already have:

  • Interracial couples may be considered to be more incompatible due to cultural differences and therefore inspire racism in one of the persons in the relationship or observers of the relationship.

  • When evaluating relationships in general, comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between the persons is inevitable. Race is one of these similarities and differences.

  • Some people believe that interracial dating will demolish cultural heritage and force one of the partners to assimilate which inspires an act of racism to extinguish the relationship and preserve the culture.

  • Some friends or family members believe that the persons in the relationship, or children born from the relationship, will be subject to criticism or harassment and will therefore discourage the relationship altogether.

  • Families with interracial couples will usually be forced to have the company of another race in their presence. The person of another race will most likely have to develop a more than cordial relationship with the other person. This could cause them to "watch their mouths" or act differently than they would if the significant other was of the same race.

Edit-These perspectives were not of my own doing, or assumed of ARFCOM. They were taken from a book written in the mid-90's about race and its effects on society and the stories in it were written by people who experienced these issues SOMETIME in their lives, not necessarily recently.

Please let me know if any of these don't make sense or if you have suggestions for improvement also.

Thanks,

Culture is not static.  "Races" have been mixing since the dawn of history.  It's a natural process.  No one can point to an "ethnic" Egyptian anymore.  No doubt their descendants exist, but they've been so mixed with Greeks, Arabs, and others that you couldn't identify them as such.

People are creatures of habit.

They like what's familiar.

Which is why they usually date people who look like them.

When they date people who look different, other people get upset.

Then they meet the person who is "different", get to know them... and usually everything is Cool and the Gang.

Sometimes they don't... but those people are jerks, so we don't talk to them.

Yes, this is a good point and something I am learning about in World Civ. However, for the sake of this argument we should just use the generally accepted races, like you see on the Census information: Black, White, Latino, Asian Pacific Islander, etc, etc.

I've thought about including that as well as examples of people dating interracial-ly just to rebel against parents.

I married an asian women, the first of her family born here.  She is much more American-ized than most her family, especially the ones that were born in Laos.  However I don't think marrying me was "assimilating" her in any way.  That process started when her family moved here 30 years ago.  Interracial marriage may accelerate this, but certainly isn't the cause.  Certainly some culture is kept, but an equal amount is lost in the process.

We have 2 children and 1 on the way, and I don't think anyone treats them different.  However I think White/Asian mixes are a bit more cushioned than most mixes.  I can imagine some combinations would have different outcomes.

I will say that I do not watch my mouth around her family.  They say shit about white people, I say shit about asian people.  We all have a good laugh and no one takes it personally.
