This is the third cold I've caught this winter.  Can you develop an immunity to colds?  Are there just different strains that you catch?

Is there anything you can do to reduce your chances of catching a cold dietary-wise?

I'm pushing 40 and cannot ever remember catching colds like this.  I went for years not being sick with anything.

I have a 6 year old and I'm sure a lot of the stuff I catch comes through her from school contact with other kids.  I am sick of coughing.

I just got a cold, never got severe, was over it in 4-5 days.

Wash hands religiously. This also helps to not catch colds in the first place. Try not to touch your face.

Go buy a bunch of Ginger Ale. The syrup helps sooth the throat and stomach. Not to mention it's a clear liquid which you will need lots of. (Also echinacea tea if you don't feel too gay drinking it.)

Buy lots and lots of chicken soup.

Vitamin C, D pills. You will need this. Also a multi-vitamin if you are not taking one already.

Good luck! Rest and STAY WARM, especially if going outside.

to quote others here, WASH YOUR HANDS and Face as often as possible. LEAVE your face alone if you havnt washed your hands.
blow your nose a few times a day even if you're not stuffy and get your 6 yr old in the bathroom scrubbing up as soon as he walks in the door after school, day care, play, wiping his ass.
kids are little germ machines,,what they dont bring in the house I think they create on their own.....

As someone who worked with the public for all his life, raised several children and Rarely get colds, flu symptoms, I Swear hand and face washing is Key
and enforcing it on the kids as well, most of my kids are all healthy as well..but for the one I had the hardest time in getting to wash up as children
lastly
Vitiman C, D and ZINC lozenges help reduce the effects when you do get caught.., I also use saline nose sprays a few times a week during cold season...

There are 3 ways germs can enter your body (for the most part).

Eyes

Nose

Mouth

Don't stick unclean fingers in any of these and you'll notice you'll have fewer colds. Normal soap and water will work to clean your hands... don't waste your time with the anti-bacterial soap. Why you ask? Because anti-bacterial soap can kill 99.9% of germs... what happens to the .1% that aren't killed? They come back stronger and will kill you in your sleep when you aren't looking because they're immune to the anti-bacterial soap.

And there are as many different strains of cold and flu viruses as there are clors in the rainbow... tens... hundreds... thousands of different kinds. When you've gotten sick with the 3rd cold this winter, it may be you've caught 3 different types of cold virus... or had the same one 3 times.

They're just like liberals... as soon as a counter is found against them, they mutate and change into something slightly different...

Rhinovirus
Rotavirus
Swine Flu
Avian Flu

I am on my second cold of the season. Started feeling it coming on in the middle of Thursday night. Went to work feeling a little bit ill Friday. By the time I came home I was ready for bed and I spent the majority of my weekend there. Last night I started to feel a little bit better which extended to today. Normally I would have called out of work and gave it one more day just to be sure and to avoid spreading it to anyone else but work needs me for the next few days.

Here is a good link for you. It doesn't get into prevention but all you can do to prevent it is limit your exposure, practice good sanitary habbits, and keep your body as healthy as possible through proper diet and exercise.

I find that cigarette smokers are always sick this time of year. Not saying you smoke OP, but if you do, please stop.

Basics:

wash hands frequently and properly (soap, warm water, and proper duration)

get adequate rest

get new tooth brushes

don't pick nose, rub eyes, put fingers in mouth, etc

take a multivitamin and drink OJ every day

stay in shape / get exercise

Can't fight them all but you can stack the deck in your favor...

I quit smoking 3 years ago.  As far as exercise, I go to 4 karate classes a week and walk in the woods hog hunting a good bit.

I'm off and on with my diet.
