[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Smartwool socks (Page 1 of 2)
|
When I worked aboard the fishing boat in AK, I had a particular pair that were like heaven for my feet.
I bought several types of socks including wool, smart wool, polypropylene, etc. I loved the columbia alpaca wool ones. I would wear them virtually every day. At "night" I would soak them with lysol and hang em in my bunkl to dry em out. A bit funky, but they were awesome compared to all the rest. I hated when they ripped and died later. No liners. The only socks I buy are "Darn Tough" brand out of Vermont I believe. They have a life time warranty. Free replacement if you ever wear a hole in them. Tactical Socks FTMFW I don't know what to think now that even socks are tactical. They even have a high speed low drag model. |
| They're great, but expensive. i have some black ones i wear around the office and low cuts i run in. In the summer the heat index might be 110 when i'm running. I'm soaked with the exception of my feet. Sure the socks are wet but with the wicking action, my feet are dry. Look for knocks offs and save a few bucks. |

I mostly wear smartwools. They make thinner ones for the summer, they quit making the ones I like the best. I wear the thick ones for slippers. I even go outside in them sometimes. I have also worn thorlos. I hear those vermont ones are good but I've never worn them. |

same here. I got some at sams for a little less but they have thick seams around the toe I did not notice and they don't fit right. So I don't wear them. I got some thin wigwams but they pilled a lot. Maybe their thicker styles are better, I know some folks like that brand. It doesn't pay to try and save, my smartwools are still going strong, the first pair I got is a little thin in the heel but I've had them for almost 10 years. |

They're the only socks I wear anymore. You can pick them up cheap at http://www.sierratradingpost.com/ |
| I went to go buy some wool socks for a trip to Utah. Academy was sold out of SmartWool and only had some expensive $8/pair ones. I was about to get 'em when I walked 2 aisles over and they had diabetic wool socks for $3/pair. Same fiber composition as the uber expensive ones, just a different percentage. They kept me warm and dry just fine. I've never worn regular wool socks so YMMV |

I wear them all by themselves. They don't need liners. First post and all! If you watch at Gander Mountain and Academy (stores close to me) you can catch them at 50% and not have to worry about cheap knock offs. I love them and wear them daily. BigDozer66 |

REI also has the USA-made ones. When they are on-sale, they are pretty good deal. I wear the sock by itself. Now if it get cold, I will wear a liner sock of Thermax, to add a bit of extra warmth.
They're great, but if you get to Costco at the right time, you can buy American made knockoffs for about half the price. I wear them all the time without liners. |
| Awesome socks. I have a pair of the Expedition hikers that are almost 10 years old - no holes and still going (though pretty thin on the heel). Smart Wool is pretty much the only sock I buy now. They more than last long enough to offset the initial high price. I wear them with athletic shoes, suits, boots, you name it. I've never felt a need to use liners with them. Comfortable as can be, keep my feat warm in the winter and cool in the summer, regardless of whether they are wet or dry, take forever to funk up - the only thing not to like is the price; but at 10 years per set of socks, I figure I can amortize $2 a year. |
