| Average depth subs operate at? Deepest? |
|
Here is a two man sub that went down almost 36,000 feet... in 1960! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathyscaphe_Trieste One of the two glass windows shattered just before it hit bottom, the outer glass. They kept going. Balls of tungsten!!! |
From here: http://www.navy.mil/navydata/cno/n87/faq.html
U.S. Navy submarines can submerge deeper than 800 feet. The actual depth is classified, but it is less than the deep-diving U.S. Navy-supported civilian research submarines that explore the bottom of the oceans. Alvin has an operational maximum depth of about 4,000 m, more than four times greater than that of the deepest diving military submarine. Shinkai 6500, a Japanese research submarine built in 1989, can work at depths down to 6,400 m. The United States and Japan are developing research submersible systems that will be able to explore the ocean floor's deepest spot: the 10,920-m Challenger Deep at the southern end of the Marianas Trench off the Mariana Islands. |

AF- "Cause we've got a perfect record!" me- ![]() AF- "How many ships are at the bottom of the ocean?" me - "no idea" AF - "Well, We've never left a plane in the sky!"
