Ok, after seeing all of this Van Halen/Hagar crap going on, I just want to know who the users of this site think of as their all time Guitar Hero. ONLY ONE - you gotta choose! Mine is and always will be Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath!!! He is who inspired me to start playing as a kid, he is GOD! http://www.iommi.com/splash.htm

s0ulzer0: "Mine is and always will be Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath!!! He is who inspired me to start playing as a kid, he is GOD!" Finally, somebody mentions Iommi when discussing GuitarGodz. As a major Black Sabbath fan I feel that he's always overlooked in everybodies rush to proclaim Hendrix/Van Halen/SRV etc. As a side poll I'll nominate Geezer as all time Bass Hero, with Les Claypool (Primus)& Cliff Burton (Metallica) tied for #2.

I've seen, for real, fights break out over the Satriani vs. Eric Johnson debate! It's funny. Thow Via or Malmsteen in there and the off it goes! I'm just curious to see if anybody brings up Robin Trower or even Jeff Hanneman!!

For technical prowess, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Chet Atkins, and believe it or not, Roy Clark - yes, Roy Clark from "Hee Haw" fame. Jeff Hanneman & Kerry King from Slayer for guitar "sound". Love the way they structure their notes. Definitely Les Claypool from Primus/Frog Brigade for bass. http://www.lesclaypool.com/home/ Tate

I really like Yngwie Malmsteen. Even though he is an arrogant ass.
Link Posted: 5/2/2002 4:36:52 PM EDT
Hendrix Technically proficient, as well as innovative. Proved that the greatest guitar ever made is a Fender Strat. Jimmy page is not far behind, although he plays a Gibson [;)]

Jeff Hanneman... [:D] Paul Allender is pretty awesome for what he does... though I think that Galder or Erkekjetter Silenoz could kick his ass in a riff-off... the_reject

Slayer (!) has 2 lead guitarists, and they are both the best.

Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, Knofler...Townsend. Eddie

glenn tipton and kk downing of priest are both incredible versitile guitarists on their own but together they are unstoppable. seem like they never get their due. i am sick of hearing all the van halen-clapton-hendrix-page rehash on how they are gods. while van halen and page were both innovative, they have done really nothing new for many years. malmsteen is another one. while super-talented, all he does is sweeps and arpeggios repeatedly. mustaine was awesome also. it is a shame about his accident taking him out of the game from now on though. that blind guy jeff healy is pretty amazing too. playing it laying in his lap like he does. oh yeah, me too. almost forgot, i rule on the axe. -jay

Ok, we can only pick one. I've been playing for almost thirty years and have about a million "favs" so I'll just keep this quick and honest. Rock - Clapton Metal - Warren DiMartini Shred - Kerry King Blues - Son House Folk - Woodie Guthrie Alt Country - Jeff Tweedy Jazz - Grant Green Country - Luther Perkins / Don Rich (tie) Finger pickin - Chet Atkins Technical - Eddie Van Halen / Eric Johnson (tie) But the #1 all time, most favorite, could stomp anyone's ass in a "duel" and win it in a walk has to be........... Buddy Guy

Well, while I think Nicholas would blast Neil Pert back to about 1865, I still have to counter Micky Hart with someone... Perhaps Danny Carey of T00L could give him a run for his money... the_reject

The one, the only, Jimmy Page (Clapton a close second)

Sorry, can't pick just one For jazz/fusion: Al DiMeola and Pat Metheny For classical: Who else but Segovia For blues: SRV, but Kenny Wayne Sheppard would be a VERY close second. For rock: Satriani, Vai, and Eric Johnson are equally talented, IMO. Then there's Steve Morse and Garry Moore, never really made guitar god status but both are solid musicians. Randy Rhodes, 'nuf said. Eddie VanHalen, arguably the most influential and innovative player in recent history. Chet Atkins, Les Paul, and Roy Clark, all very talented. And I almost forgot Django Reinhardt. He was an amazing jazz player. There, that's just a few off the top of my head. [:)]

Sorry...you gotta be kidding me...Kenny Wayne Shepard can't play a song without copying the sound SRV could make out of that guitar. Kenny Wayne Shepard isn't even close to SRV

Buddy Guy is bada$$ without a doubt. Clapton is sooooo over rated. SRV is my favorite by far...but anyone heard of Phil Keaggy?
Link Posted: 5/2/2002 5:17:49 PM EDT
Jerry Garcia, even his aimless noodling beats all these chest-thumpers hands down.

Jeff Beck should be in here somewhere

Phil Keaggy is amazing too. Michael Landau is another amazing underated/unknown player.

My favorite guitarist, regardless of whether he's the "best" or not, is Alex Lifeson. I'm not a player so I can't say anything about how well he plays, all I know is everything he does sounds damn good! and that's what it's all about. There! I've named my ONE favorite, so now I can pick others I really like [:D] I'd rate Adrian Smith/Dave Murray of Iron Maiden as better than Downing/Tipton from Priest. JMHO, of course (see the above disclaimer.) Lindsey Buckingham is also incredible. Kerry Livgren (of the original Kansas) and Jorma Kaukonen always sounded great, too. Most of the guitarists previously mentioned in the thread have earned "god" status as far as I'm concerned. Bassists? My favorites are Geddy Lee and Steve Harris. Geezer Butler, Roger Glover, and John Paul Jones fill out my picks (I never liked Primus.) Drummers? Neil Peart, Nicko McBrain, Phil Ehart, Cozy Powell, Clive Burr, Carl Palmer, Steve Smith, Mike Portnoy, & Kenny Aronoff.

The sublime Donald Roeser (Busk Dharma) of Blue Oyster Cult. Best damn guitar player in the world AND a nice guy. He does NOT have an overblown ego, even though he has a right to one.
