Wife read a Netflix recommendation thread here, suggested it.

Original, or Redux? Both are available to watch instantly.

(We're watching the original. Just curious...)

Original.  I own Redux on DVD –– the extra footage doesn't really get you much in the way of actual substance.*

*:  a lot more T&A in the Redux doesn't qualify as "substance" but that's just IMO.

Watch the original.

It's a long movie anyway.  Coppola really wanted to include everything that makes up the Redux in the original, but the movie studio forced him to cut it back for marketing purposes.  A rare case where the studio was right.

If you really like the original, then seek out the Redux.  Some of the edited-out portions are interesting and a few clarify some of the story-line better.

I may watch it one day, but I'm a huge fan of the original and am shocked that she wanted to watch it in the first place (after I told her what it was about). I doubt we even watch the whole original tonight. But, anyway, when the redux came out I read so much negative stuff about it that I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I like to see the movie that originally "wowed" the audience.

If you like it, then watch the Redux.

I liked both, but both are long so I may watch one or the other only one more time in my life.

The original is better.  But watch the original and then watch the redux.  Get both.

Get both but watch the original cut first.

Same here. The scenes in Redux from the rubber plantation went on forever.

If you are a fan of the original, you'll enjoy the redux.  But for first timers, as someone else mentioned, I think the original is the way to go.

The studio's demand for Coppola to cut the length really forced him to cut to the meat of the story leaving less clutter.

As a fan you will enjoy seeing the cut scenes though.  I enjoyed seeing them, but if I wanted to sit down and watch the movie straight through right now, I'd probably choose the original.

There is a reason it's called "editing".

As an aficionado, I would willingly sit through a twelve DVD set of all of the outtakes and trims of that film.
But that's not going to happen. The original theatrical cut is genius and stands alone.

The original flows better, makes it about the mission. I could do without the whole French plantation sequence.

Original now, Redux later.

The Redux version just feels loooooooooooong compared to the original.

After watching either, find "Hearts of Darkness; A Filmmaker's Apocalypse".

Documentary on the making of the movie.  Fascinating stuff.
