Downloaded and installed the latest version of iTunes, went to update my iPhone 3G to version 4.2, walked away and came back to find my computer saying something along the lines of the software update could not be downloaded.  My phone must have already started the process because it is dead.  When I plug it into my computer I am told that it is in recovery mode.  When I try to restore the phone via iTunes, I get the message "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (36)."

Any ideas on how to get my phone working again?  I Have tried to restoring it several times, everytime with the same error.

Any ideas?

Hold down both the on/off button and home button for 10-20secs and see if it restarts

Might have to put it into DFU mode and try from there.

If it shows the stupid little iPhone ––-> iTunes.... you need to fix iTunes first, then plugging the phone into it should start recovering.

Otherwise it's you + Apple Genius.

uninstall Itunes and reinstall it.

Sounds stupid but it fixes many of its shitty syncing errors like yours.

The Apple Genius says it is a hardware problem.  I think that is BS because there was nothing wrong with it before I went to upgrade to 4.2

Piss.
