Just got home 15 minutes ago from getting a haircut. it is dusk and I walk up to the front door of my home-the door light is not on and my wife and kids are home. There is a mid-20's guy (stranger) leaning over in front of my door (possibly tying his shoe-I don't know).

As I walk up behind him, he startles and says  "motherfucker..oh fuck you scared me". At this point all I know is my wife/kids were alone with this guy around. No-I wasn't carrying (Illinois).

I am normally a very mellow guy-but I lost it-after hearing him swear that I instantly went into a very aggressive posture and yelling who the fuck are you...get the fuck of my property etc..yada, yada, yada. he left without incident.

I walk inside and the wife tells me he was trying to sell newspapers door to door. She heard the whole incident and had no issues with my top of lungs behavior.

Did I overreact/

By the standards of normal society? Yes.

By the standards of Arfcom? Hell no.

Nope.  Some strange dude on my porch, cussing at me?  They're going to get a nasty response from me.

Nope.  No one talks to me like that around my house without a similar reaction.

That language towards the homeowner, even not knowing you were the homeowner. I think you were totally justified.

If your SO thinks you did fine, why are you asking those of us who were not there and could not assess the situation?

ETA - it sounds like you did good.

I'm gonna have to see an M$Paint depiction of the entire incident, starting with the haircut, to render an opinion. Get busy.

He will now come back and kill you in your sleep.

Of course, as a Gold Level Team Member, your wolf stare of dominance should have been sufficient. Bronze levels such as myself have to resort to blading.

You should have just forced him to submit to your wolfen dominance.

Edit: Beat by 34 fucking seconds.  I am so disappoint in myself.

Because if we said he did overreact, he would then be looking for advice on whether to eject. His question allowed him to address both concerns.

Come to my door without the lights on after dark, and expect the same.

I opened the door with my rifle in hand one time (on the way to go shooting) to a couple of sales guys who hadn't knocked yet. Their jaws just dropped. I was kinda surprised because I didn't expect to see two guys standing their. I bladed, and said "Who the fuck are you?" They almost shit themselves, and all the one guy said was "Windows... We sell windows." I then relaxed and pointed to the sign on the door that says "No Solicitation, Fuck off!" They turned and left while saying "Sorry, sorry..." After they left the driveway I had to shut the door just to laugh.

I live in Texas and I wouldn't have drawn down on the guy even though I would have been carrying.  I probably would have been more polite but I don't live in the city either.

ETA ~ Ideally, perhaps calmly telling the profane scamp to get off property would have been a better way to do it but realistically most of us would have reacted pretty much the same way.

No.

Needs a poll.

Even as a small child I was taught to be respectful of other people's homes.  He either had it coming become he scared you or because he cursed at you.  Either way "good shout."
