My furnace will only start some of the time.  The exhaust fan (i think that's what it is called) will start, then the pilot light gets ignited, then either the main burner will kick on and stop shortly thereafter or will not kick on at all.

So far, I have been able to get it restarted by turning the furnace on and off by using the switch on the side.  This is ok but obviously something is wrong.

I had replaced the exhaust fan 3 years ago because it was broke and I can make some minor repairs myself but don't get too technical one me.

Your flame sensor is dirty(has carbon residue on it) and when it doesn't sense the flame it shuts your furnace off.  It is a small piece of steel that extends into the flame area and has a wire connected to it near where it is bolted in place.

Unhook the wire.  Unbolt the sensor.  Scrub it with some 0000 steel wool.  Replace.  Should work fine after that.

My furnace needs this done every other year or so.

If that doesn't do it, call the pros.

Flame sensor dirty from a lack of changing filters.

Find where your flme sensor is, remove it and clean it gingerly with some very fine sandpaper.

Problem solved

Old/clogged filter?

If I don't change mine every three months, the furnace kicks on then kicks off immediately.

Could be flame sensor like the others say, Or it could be a cracked heat exchanger ( thats the extreme i'm not saying it is one ) it could be cracked and tripping the high limit switch you should have two of thos one above the heat exchanger and one in front of the fire box. Some are manual and some are automatic reset. depending on yours it could be this. IDK i am not there to see it.

Edit: If you are in SC near me i will come look at it, I am an HVAC technician.
