I have a buddy that flies F-18s. I sent the guy a Kershaw JunkYardDog and a Gerber LMF ASEK.
I know everyone on ARFCOM thinks any large fixed blade makes you "that guy". I like large fixed blades when in the woods. When I was a kid I carried a Buck 110 but was always coveting my friends large fixed blades as they were more useful in some ways, though heavy. I told him I know that a large fixed blade could be a problem during ejection etc. and I would not be insulted if he didn't carry the ASEK in flight. What would be a USEFUL and APPROPRIATE knife for an F-18 driver? Thanks |

I decent 3-3.5" folder should function. But if there is a higher risk of going down in bad guy territory, he may want something with a bit more fighting capability [not that he'll likely be fighting with it, but IBTHIANNITNIANHI(figure it out)]
Or if he's in, say, a jungle area where it may be needed for bushwhacking/crafting, he may want a bigger blade. |

So, you think the ASEK is too large? He will be afloat soon towards A-stan. The ASEK is supposedly made for Aviation. He has been wearing it during flight but that has been stateside. May consider getting him a Spydero Military or Endura. |

When I flew Eagles in my younger days, I carried a Gerber Mark I Googling Gerber Mark I ETA: Certainly a full size fixed blade. As large as the ASEK. He may be OK with the Gerber I got him. I would hate for him to be injured during ejection because of it's size. |

I carry a benchmade auto, and small swiss army knife to change fuse settings/laser codes, and a leatherman on my boot. Really anything that fits in a flight pocket would be all right. You carry too much shit in combat to have a big ass knight strapped anywhere. |

I think the ASEK is a great knife for a fighter pilot. My Gerber Mark 1 fit in my G-suit leg pocket just fine. |

My Mark 1 was in my right leg pocket. Hmm, there is no pocket on the R g-suit leg, just in the flt suit, I'm assuming flt suit pocket. |

they are the same, I was ASSuming since you said R pocket, you meant the thigh pocket(which is not there), cause you know the SAFE pack goes in the right leg bottom pocket (combat reference ) with no room left for anything.
Is that a pic of you? Them some shiny boots |

Dont know what they look like now, but G-suits used to have a knife pocket on the left thigh inside and a big pocket on each leg down at the bottom against the top of the foot. ETA: http://www.456fis.org/THE%20HISTORY%20OF%20SURVIVAL%20EQUIPMENT/g-suit%5B1%5D.jpg Good pic. Thanks to the pilots in thread for serving our country. Also good on Plumber576 getting the knife for the USMC pilot. Guys need to know that Americans value them. |

|
| I actually know an F-18 pilot who carries a Gerber BMF that he got from a retiring F-14 driver. When I asked him how he could handle a knife that big he said that it makes up for flying such a small plane, LOL. It's more of a good luck charm than anything because the F-14 pilot had "ditched" over some shithole back in the day and found the knife came in very handy. In reality though if the OP's friend is a Hornet Rider he probably would be ejecting over water so I can't see it making much difference in the amount of pain involved... Does he carry and M9, M11, Glock 19, etc? If so (like most pilots), the knife would only be useful in a utility scenario thus smaller is better. |
|
The knives Hornet drivers are issued for flight loadout are much better than anything you get to legally buy––but your heart is definitely in the right place!
Don't know what the model number of the one we issue here is, but I know it's fully automatic, and made by Benchmade. It's a quality piece. Not a lot of room on a fighter pilot's suit after the g-suit is strapped up...and not a lot of room in the cockpit to dig one out. Flying space on these guys is sort of limited...but if he's an outdoor type, he might like the knife for personal use... |

If only for ther banter between TaylorWSO and Mach, this thread delivers.
Agreed!! Thanks for input sixtiger, Taylor and Mach as well as everyone else. . I will send him another knife (hey, you can't have too many!!!) and tell him to use it for whatever. |
