I have always thought that the United States should look on the Vietnam War in the same manner that Lincoln should have looked on Chancellorsville.

A minor setback that cost the Confederates one of their most able commanders - Stonewall Jackson.

At Gettysburg, Lee would have been invincible had Stonewall been at his right side. And with Meade's army brushed aside, there would have been no Federal army between Lee and Washington DC!

The Vietnam War cost 56,000 American lives. It cost the North Vietnamese and their Viet Cong allies, more than a 1,000,000 men under arms.

The US has somewhere between 2500 and 2700 MIAs. The NVA has more than 330,000 MIAs.

For ten years, basically between 1965 and 1975, the United States confined Soviet and Red Chinese military 'adventurism' to this tiny area of the world, kicked their collective asses and got out under its own terms. If those terms were later dishonored by the US Congress, that is no fault of the US armed forces!

And what of the 'Domino Theory'? Just imagine for a moment that the United States did not actively oppose North Vietnamese aggression against the South, and simply abandoned it ally?

The NVA would have arrived in Saigon in 1965, with a 1,000,000 more men under arms than it had in 1975. They would have quickly gone into Cambodia (which they did in Dec., 1978), thence into Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore!

Can anyone doubt this?  But as it was, the Vietnamese lasted but ten years in Cambodia and got their asses handed to them again.

I just wish we had the same videos of the NVA leaving Phnom Penh, harassed by the local militias all the way back to the borders, as we do for the US evacuation of Saigon!

It would be most pleasant to watch!
