Is netflix worth it, thinking about getting the streaming package.
I dropped cable last week. I only had basic cable which was filled with nothing but trash, every time I scrolled through the menu and saw something that was, "hey that might be good", guess what - "This Channel Is Not Included In Your Package". By no means worth the extra 30 bucks on top of internet. |
|
I think so. I went from a $150 per month ATT UVerse package down to $20 per month internet and the $9 streaming Netflix package. Pretty much the only thing I dont get is sports. Everything else is on Netflix or can be streamed from elsewhere. However, I do find Sunday nights the internet is slow and thus I cannot watch Netflix. |
|
I dropped cable about 6 months ago. (-$120/mo) Juiced the internet to 24MB. ($50/mo) Popped an XBOX 360 on there with Live. ($54/yr) Netflix. ($10/mo) Hulu streaming to 360. (free) ESPN app on 360 for the few games I watch. (UNR vs. Boston College baby!) (free) Way cheaper than cable. |
|
Set up Netflix yesterday (took all of 10 minutes) and wife will be cancelling Dish today.
For a long time we have lamented about the 300 channels of abso-fucking-lutley NOTHING but trash on. Plus 7.99 + tax/fees is alot better than the near $100 we are spending on Dish. No contest. Cable/sat days are numbered methinks. |
|
I have Dish Network right now, I'm spending ~130/mo for everything.
I'm going to drop all the movie channels and go with Netflix as soon as I can get a higher download speed. Right now my isp is doing 1.2mbp at best and the standard def Netflix looks like shit, I need 3-5mps to stream HD. |
|
Get a $100 Roku box. You can get NHL, MLB, and NBA on there IIRC.
Ah, here we go. http://www.roku.com/mlb-partner Looks like you have to sign up for MLB but you can still see the games if you're so inclined. Edit: And it streams Netflix. Forgot to add that part.

I shitcanned netflix.
It took me 5 months to figure out "hey idiot, you've been paying a monthly rental fee for those movies sitting on your counter for the past 5 months." On demand via cable is a better deal for me. I watch just as many movies a month as I did with netflix, but it costs less. |
|
Got rid of cable about a year ago now. Netflix streaming is an excellent substitute without most of the obnoxious propaganda and advertisement. Although I will say I have started noticing more overt advertisements within some of the shows themselves, Subway seems to be one of the worst offenders. If you are big into sports you are a bit out of luck but in our case we just head to a sports bar on the rare occasion of a game we don't want to miss. |

Netflix is great if you like to watch half a movie and have it crap out, restart it, watch some more, have it crap out.... ISP Issue? I have shitty ass comcast, and have no problem streaming in full HD to my Xbox. The only time it craps out of me is when I stream it to Wii on wireless. (I have an ancient 802.11b router) |

gave up cable LONG ago,
i never watched anything whenit was aired.. it was always DVRed found torrents, thats all i need there is not one thing you can say oh did you see _______ that is not on a torrent a few minutes after its aired.. and since i never watched it when it aired anyway.,. nothing changed for me, |

Netflix is great if you like to watch half a movie and have it crap out, restart it, watch some more, have it crap out.... That's gotta be your connection. My service has been flawless and the quality very good. If you are using cable internet, make sure to check the copper throughout your house and replace splitters and cable as necessary. I did this along with calling Comcast and getting them to run a new line from the pole to my house and it worked wonders. My connection went from stop and go to 100% uptime all the time. If you call your ISP without doing a little bit of homework, they will just come change out your modem, get it running fora minutes and then call it good. The copper infrastructure from the pole to your modem matters more than people think. |
| Dumped my premium cable package and the "extra channels" (usually spanish/indian versions of the regular channels) and picked up netflix. Definitely worth it, unless you like watching the "weekly HBO movie that will be played over and over and over and over" repeatedly. |
|
Netflix is a ripoff because they raised their rates by a dollar. I'd gladly make two trips to the video store, deal with rude employees, pay the late fees, pay the higher rates and risk the movie I want not being there over the dollar increase. (The Jews didn't have it that bad.)

If you live in a flat area with a lot of local stations, then an antenna for your HDTV for over the air stuff would be the icing on the cake. |

I just fired DirecTV in favor of: Roku box, top of the line for $100+shipping Netflix Streaming $7.99/month Hulu Plus $7.99/month That's going to save me about $61 per month or just over $730 each year. And that doesn't take into account that, in February, DirecTV is raising their rates. The only thing that I'm not getting that I might like to get are live sports and live news. Both can be had through the Roku if you want to pay, but so far, I don't miss them that much. |

Same with the people I know. I do not know anybody personally that has any issues with it. Maybe the issues are regional? |

Netflix is great if you like to watch half a movie and have it crap out, restart it, watch some more, have it crap out.... That isn't my experience at all. My wife and I just got 3mb DSL and tried the trial of Netflix and we have watched a total of probably 200hrs of shows with absolutely 0 problems. I won't ever pay for cable again. |

Netflix is great if you like to watch half a movie and have it crap out, restart it, watch some more, have it crap out.... NEVER had that problem with TW's 7MB/s Cable internet service. To be completely honest, I don't think I'll be getting cable back when my house finally gets done and I move back in. I'm just going to get my local channels through ClearQAM on my HTPC and get everything else through Netflix and Hulu. Now I DID notice that Hulu's playback, though my HTPC, wasn't completely smooth, but it was livable. Once I figure out how to fix that minor lag, I'll probably never miss cable. |

Mine can be a buggy POS sometimes too, but it works flawlessly others. I have >20mbps so it's not a speed problem. I get tearing and artifacts caused by the shitty microsoft silverlight plugin too, and that annoys the hell out of me. ![]() |

Xbox is really a bargain. |

Quoted: Netflix's streaming movie collection is ok, starts to suck after awhile. Cable's selection sucks all the time and is a lot more expensive. WINNER: Netflix. It doesn't suck as much as cable and is cheaper at it. At least with my cable company I can get newer movies. |
|
Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: I had Netflix streaming... and canceled it because of the shitty selection. It is pretty good now. It's only been 4 or 5 months. Have that made that much of an improvement that recently? If so, I may resubscribe. There is all kinds of good shit on there. More than I could ever watch. |

Netflix is great if you like to watch half a movie and have it crap out, restart it, watch some more, have it crap out.... I have wireless and evil DSL. This has happened to me...........ZERO times. You may be doing it wrong. We have Comcast internet and I use an 'ethernet over powerline' setup to get the signal from my cable modem to my PS3 because the construction of my house impedes WiFi for some reason. Only very occasional problems with Netflix streaming. Usually 1 time a week. I'd recommend having your cable guy (or whatever) come out and find out why you are having an issue. I was having high latency and poor download speeds. Comcast sent out a guy who put in a powered booster. That worked for a month or two. Then it went to shit again. They dispatched a guy who knew what he was doing and he pulled the booster and followed the signal out to the street. He then proceeded to replace the 3 connections that were in the line from the street to the house. All of them had gone bad to one point or another due to water infiltration. The core on one of the connectors he opened up was completely oxidized. The only thing that was conducting the signal was a mass of copper oxide. It just crumbled away. |

I dropped cable a few months ago. A lot of newer movies are not available with the Netflix streaming package, so I dropped that after the free trial period. I use IMDB (free), which has a lot of movies that Netflix doesn't offer streaming. Watched "Book of Eli", and "The Social Network" last night, and "Date Night" on Saturday. Started "Zombieland" yesterday, but switched to one of the other movies when the wife got home from returning shit, since she wouldn't like it.

OK great, sounds like netflix it is. Screw cable, I think the only way I would go back is if I could pick the stations I want. Why the fuck was I paying for HGTV, The Spanish Channel, MSNBC and all of that BS anyways. HGTV is good TV. It does have some gay shows, though. |
