I have a friend, who's son is being promoted. He has to go to Hawaii and the promotion ceremony is to take place on a war ship. She told me he is being promoted to, what she believe is Commander. I do know that he is stationed on the mainland.
Does this sound right? When the Navy promotes higher up officers, do they hold the ceremony on a ship? Is there a rank called "Commander"? I know nothing about the Navy other than they kick ass and give rides to the Marines. |
I think having the ceremony on the USS Missouri or at the USS Arizona memorial would be good guesses. We just finished watching the documentary "Carrier" and there was a re-enlistment ceremony at the Arizona. I'd think either location for either ceremony would be a pretty big deal for a squid.

Thanks for the replies and I now know a little more about the navy. I just didn't think that he would have to travel to Hawaii for a promotion. Not that it is a bad thing. He can get promoted pretty much wherever he chooses, especially to O5. I promoted a Staff Sergeant at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington once per his request, and another chest deep in the Atlantic off of Onslow Beach at Camp Lejeune (an odd request of his, especially since we were comm guys and not recon or anything.)
