Went to the Doc after feeling terrible pain in lower back. He tells me I have a kidney stone. Pain has subsided for time being, what should I expect now!

It really  depends on the size of the stone.  Even a very small one will feel like you are trying to squeeze a bolder out.  The pain will be some of the worst you have ever felt.  Get ready for a really good time.

Having had a couple mine werent too bad untill the day of birth. Its more annoying than anything (or has been my case).
When it does um, evacuate its quite a unique feeling.

ATTN MODS: Since this topic comes up so often on ARFCOM, Would you consider creating a dedicated "Kidney Stone" forum?
Or, maybe just a Kidney Stone sticky post?

I've had several stones, and a lithotrypsy.

The pain can be quite variable. Some weren't too bad, a couple were the worst pain imaginable.

Lots of fluids!!! That not only helps them pass, but also seems to lessen the pain somewhat. Take a nonsteroidal like Motrin regularly, although you may need something stronger on top of that. People are also often prescribed Flomax to help them pass.

If you don't pass it, they need to go after it or break it up.

Any idea about the size? Did they do Xray or CT?

I suppose I will have to just wait it out. He gave me Vicodin so I got that going for me!

I passed one that looked like a goat head sticker (puncture vine sticker). on March 3rd 1980.. Fought with it for almost 3 weeks.

Demerol is the drug of choice.

Doctor wants your to pee through a paint strainer  to catch stone for pathology.  Once it starts to move out the paint strainer is the farthest thing from your mind, you're to busy white knuckling the sink or whatever you can grab onto to brace yourself for the pain.

I had one.  It was 10mm.  It would try to pass and get caught up.  It would go away.  The doc said they can float around and intermittently cause you pain.

They blew mine up in the tank.  Litho-something.  Then I had to piss through a filter for a week to collect the sand.

I had one just last year.

It was hands down the most painful thing I have ever experienced.  Pain so bad it made me vomit a few times.

My piss looked like iced tea.

The wife got me into the ER and I sat there on a bed moaning like a little girl until they gave me IV painkillers.

Damn, that sucked.

You had a minor attack.  The major ones will leave you whimpering on the ground doing the Dying Cockroach trying (in vain) to find any position that will ease the pain.

The size of the stone is immaterial. One the size of a grain of sand can and will reduce you to a blubbering pile of jelly.

Drink water.  Lots of water.  No caffeinated drinks - coffee, tea, soda - gone.  Zero.  Exercise every day.  Kidney stones are caused by diet and lack of exercise.  You have to change your lifestyle or you will continue to get them.

Drinking lots of water every day is the key.

Don't forget that you have one in you - and it WILL rear its ugly head again.  You can beat it by hitting the water HARD every day until it passes.

I've been shot before and it didn't hurt as bad as the attack of the kidney stones.

Seriously, went to the ER and thought I was going to die. So did they for a while. I almost passed out driving the 3 miles to the hospital. Threw up in the waiting room.

Woke up feeling like 10 mules kicked me in the jewels that morning. Worse than the opening shock - x's 10 of a T10-1B parachute.

They gave me 800mg motrin and sent me home. Of course, this was after threatening to shoot the nurse in the leg when she was going to put an IV the size of a bic pen barrel in my arm. I sort of deserved it I guess. Don't think I ever did pass it. It was 4mm. If I did, I never knew it. Had a few attacks in the last couple of years. Next time, I'll take the IV.

Not sure what's worse, passing a boulder or them sticking a garden hose up your wee.

I lay off the soda and drink more water now.

You'll think you are going to die, then pray for it before it's over.

You best start peing sitting down, if the pain makes you pass out, you could smash your skull on the tub!!!

My stone was 9MM big.  No insurance; the Doc gave me 20 percocets and said to drink 2 gallons aday, I peed that thing out in 36 hours.

I saved it and named it "King George".  He is around here someplace.

Good luck!!!!

Toradol will stop the spasm/contracting around the kidney stone and let it pass.......Ask me how I know

You wont need any pain reliever once the Toradol kicks in since the pain is being caused by the contractions around the stone as it is trying to pass.....the Toradol stops that

A world of hurt.

I've had two. The first woke me in the middle of the night. I thought someone stabbed me in the back. I went to the ER. The pain shifted to my front. When I went to give them a urine sample, the stone came out.

The second one got stuck about an inch away from freedom. I drank a gallon of water. It finally came out at about 980 fps. I thought it broke the toilet.

I have had five kidney stones and have a couple more ticking time bombs still in my kidneys... You are going to get an education in pain. Good thing is after its over your pain tolerance will be higher. I hope you aren't a habitual stone former. When you are rolling on the floor in excruciating pain trying to rip you kidney out of your body with your bare hands just remember this: The best thing about pain is that it eventually stops. This goes for everything. Kidney stones, finding a love one dead of an overdose in the bathroom, staring down the barrel of your own .45. Remember that and you'll be ok.

Also if you do go to the E.R. Don't fuck around. Say your pain level is a 10 and plead for narcotic pain meds.

I would describe mine as a sore back, that then swiftly graduated to a rusty chain saw that was variously on idle and on full rev and jammed into my lower back. At the ER the tordol took the edge off it a little but the morphine actually made the pain stop. the vicoden was worthless for when I went home just took a couple teeth off the chainsaw, the kidney doc looked at me like I was insane when i said that was what I was taking, he gave me "diladunum" which worked great except that I had to wait till the vicoden was wearing off to take it, so i took it when teh vicoden was wearing off and then passed out, woke up 5 hours later blubbering in pain, took another chug water, piss,  pass out, repeat for 2 days till my lithotripsy(boss had called my cell and said I couldnt be gone that long I was needed for work) lithotripsy will get rid of it but the bill is HUGE even with insurance(4k).

I got morphine for mine.

I couldnt pass it and they went up and got it and pulled it out.

I got an epidural and fentanyl for that.

This was before the sonic wave stuff.

The stent was the fun part having a string hanging out of your dick for a week.

The doc says take a deep breath and pulls it out.

Bottom line, don't drink powdered milk as a weight gain shake.

Too much protein makes kidney stones.

I've had 3 all very similar in size and time frame.

Lower back pain, vomiting, the stone will control you like a puppet.  It made me use heating pads, take hot baths etc.

1st time was scary because I though I had food poisoning or something.

for me pain subsided ~24hrs after initial lower back pain.  I presume this was when the stone was in my bladder.  Soon after it passed. All 3 were only about BB size and crystalline I was actually surprised at when it shot out of my dick. That was the best part because I knew it was over.  Happened pretty much the same all 3 times.

I had one years ago that sent me to the ER. The pain was so bad that I drenched my clothes before getting to the hospital.

It came on very quickly, to the point I couldn't stand. The ER was busy at the time so they gave me some mild pain killers that had no effect.
I couldn't control the pain, and writhed on the gurney. A nurse came by to told me to be quiet...I was disturbing the other patients...

Finally, a Doc came in and looked me over. He said "go get Martha" she was the reliever of all things painful. I am still out of my mind in pain
she places a hand on my shoulder and says " are you ready?" Oh Gawd Yes...I respond

I felt as if I was in a cartoon. You know when the characters eyes are going round and round in the sockets and birdies are tweeting in circles above you.
I said to Martha, "What was that?"

Oh that was a cross between Heroin and Morphine....I could still feel the blockage but it didn't bother me anymore...

They quickly took me into X ray and gave me a big dose of tracing fluid. The pain returned and all I remember is someone yelling "Go get Martha"...

Once its in your bladder you are home free.  The pain is when it passes from your kidney into your ureter.  The other guys are right, that pain is like a jabbing a broken glass bottle into the lower side of your back.

I asked my doc about this and he says there really isnt much data to support any cause on it.  He says some people just produce stones more than others.

His only advice was to drink plenty of water and keep the pH down in your urine.
