I'm buying a new computer for my Mom for Christmas, wondering if anyone has any input on changes to this build below.  I'm not going to build one myself, and have been happy with my HP Laptop I purchased last year and have no problem sticking with them.  I used to buy Dell, but it seems like they have gone to shit on both the consumer and business sides of the house in the last 2 years.

I might take over her computer for a period of time when Diablo 3 finally gets released.

She just goes on Facebook, plays Bejeweled, checks her email, etc.  I know I could get away with a bargain basement computer if need be.

$1250 for a Core i7 (LGA1156 socket) system seems high.

Have you checked slickdeals.net or fatwallet.com for sales on HP or Dell computers?

Please look here.  Listen: most people want a Cray to surf the web, watch a video and draft a letter.  You don't need that.  Mom don't need that!

then why not do that?  you could easily get her a computer that's well beyond her needs for ~$600 tops.

why make her spend double for stuff she doesn't need?

Yes it does.

I spent about that much last year on i7 920 LGA1366 build. Of course the video card was $420 by it self.

way over priced.   for general web surfing and word processing mom could get away with a computer half that price.

why does mom need an i7?  and 8gb of ram?  and the GTX460?

FYI the Geforce 420 is a low end card. Gaming will suck with it.
