i'm going to be looking for work in a couple of months in a new state and was curious how others found their jobs.  the last 2 jobs i've had i found through craigslist.  craigslist is great for NYC because there are literally hundreds of new job postings everyday but i doubt the volume will be anywhere near as high in houston...

Lucky as hell.  Did computer consulting in Minneapolis, burned out on the commute and 12 hour days and moved to Colorado.

Was unemployed for a month and the savings were drying up.  I took a shitty job with a small company to get some income going.  I hated it.  I kept putting resumes out.  I questioned the sanity of moving out here from a well paying job.

A month later my girlfriend asked if I wanted to double date with one of her friends that lived in her apartment complex.  Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun.    Turns out the friend's boyfriend was the IT manager of a local tech company.  He asked what I did, he looked at me for a second and asked for a resume.  I gave him one, and now I am going on my 12th year here.

I am a lucky bastard sometimes.

Company website for one, another I used to work for called me up and asked what I was up to. I have to decide by 1/11. More money for one, better benefits and the chance to run the hurricane machine at the other.

I cant decide.

Out of college I couldn't find anything, so used a family connection to land a horrible job paying $7 an hour but in the field I wanted to work in.  Worked my way up for 2 years until I was the manager of the place.  Then I was able to use a recruiter to hook me up with my current job and have been here 10 years now.  Getting that resume built over the next few years is huge even if you have to take a bad job to do it.  Unless you are in a very high demand field.

After graduating college I was looking in the newspaper ads.  The first two jobs openings in my field that I invterviewed for I didn't get.

I was kind of dissappointed and stoppped looking for a little while.  Then my dad happened to be reading the paper one day and saw an ad for another job opening in my field.  He told me about it so I applied and sent in my resume.   Third time was a charm.

I got my job by talking to a Marine Officer Selection Officer 10 years ago.

Have you looked at the TX state gov't website?  I know Florida has a statewide job posting section on the website for both government and private sector jobs.  Texas might, too.

You might be surprised about Houston.

Maybe not the same volume as NYC, but as good or better than any other large city in the country.  It has done very well through the recession depending on industry of course.

I had a difficult time after moving, finding a job in Engineering. I was "over qualified" for all positions for which I applied.

So, I found a good company and started through a temp agency, as an assembler,  working for peanuts.

I came to work, on time, everyday. I worked my ass off, doing more than was asked of position.

Two months later I was hired permanent, transferred to Engineering with a nice raise.

Staffing agency. Hired, worked 4 months and laid off since I was still temp. Boss called every 6 months asking if I was ready to come back, no temp service. Finally after 3 years, I agreed if he met my salary requirements.

He did. Been here 6 years now. Aerospace Machinist.

I was with a competing company and had always really admired my current employer.  A position came open and I sent in a resume but they hired someone else.  He lasted a year and went on to something else.  I sent my resume in again and got hired.  That was 10 years ago.  I do commercial lending and it took me over 2 years to "clean up" the mess that the prior guy had put on.  I'll make senior VP this year and, if the good Lord is willing and the creek don't rise, I'll retire from this bank in 10 years.

Tech recruiter saw my profile and resume on linkedin. 6 month contract to hire. Interviewed, and was hired shortly thereafter.

5 months passed, they decided it was best to keep me (I was still getting offers from other companies) so they bought out the remaining month of my contract and hired me full time.

she went in the secured entrance...  I parked outside and went in the main lobby...

now... to this day i dont really remember "HOW"   but i came out a SWBW employee stayed with em for 7 yrs.. best job I think I have ever had ...

I took a trip to the town; met with all the "supervisors" that I could, sorted out the ones I liked...

Applied to the 'good' ones.
Went back to my old job/town...
"Cleaned" the house ( into U-Haul boxes), kept working, waited for the phone to ring.

It took all of 5 days to get hired, asked for 2 week notice from old job, gave 2 week notice, then found a place to live...
Moved...

I put my resume on what was called "The Monster Board" (now just monster.com) back in the late 90's looking for  a UNIX/C programming job. I got a couple of nice offers and picked one and I am still at the same company today. It might be a bit harder to get an IT job like that now. I'm not interested in finding out either.

Government website USAjob.com, filled out resume and submitted it.
Oddest hiring I have ever been through. I am a Veteran and was the only Vet on the hiring list.
So, they called me and asked Mr. Scorpionmain would you take this job. I said, "yes"!
These people had never seen me before. No interview or nothing, they just gave me a govt. job.

I have a friend of mine who's found his last two jobs (and good ones) just from hanging out being a barfly at the right bars where the rich people go.

So far he's been a upper level sales rep for a steel warehouse distributor and now he's doing mortgage brokering.

Both of these jobs were had just bullshitting with somebody at the bar who happened to run or manage those businesses.
