I am looking at the ever decreasing job market and considering enlisting in the military as an officer. I know most advice on here will be biased, but I still think I can gain more insight than from a recruiter. I am 29, currently working as a Manufacturing Engineer for an aerospace company. Have my bachelors/A&P License. All of my professional experience is in the field of aviation and I would like to keep it that way. Obvious choice is Airforce, but as I am totally uneducated on the other branches hopefully you guys can give me some direction to further research. These are my reasons, feel free to correct me if I am mistaken or add to the list. Oh and I am currently employed so it's no rush just something I would like to do at some point in my life.

20 year retirement
Decent pay + housing allowance
Consistency (ie no layoffs)
Benefits

What are the major drawbacks??

There are lay-offs if you are a fuckup. Up or out means that if you don't get selected for promotion you had better start looking for a job.

If you don't know anything about it, don't do it until you learn. Put forth a bit more effort than asking on ARFCOM, though.

Appreciate it, not going to sign up today just looking for a little direction. As far as the layoffs, I have managed to stay employed on the civilian side through downsizing etc.
