Looking to purchase a Katana, I see Cold Steel makes some (Warrior Series) that you can get for around $300...

http://www.coldsteel.com/japanwarrior.html

They seem pretty resilient....

Anyone have some opinions on them?

Old-school taggage.  I have a Cold Steel Tanto which is excellent.  A Katana or Wakazashi is one item I am missing from my Zombie preps.

I think they're asking too much $ considering they use 1055 steel. Maybe the standards are different for swords (toughness) and that is why 1055 is used? The edge holding and hardness will likely be soft.

Traditional Japanese swords are made with an edge of high carbon steel (to hold an edge) and a 'backbone' of low carbon steel.

With the length of a sword, a blade that is entirely made of a hard steel (that holds a good edge) is easier to break.

We just had a thread about buying replica swords off the internet here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=1121653

Lots of good info.

I thought about a Cold Steel Katana, but even as impractical as any sword is these days unless we do fall into armageddon, I'd still rather have and practice using a more modern short sword like a Gage custom or something similar. Katana's and longer swords are just something in the worst of times, I couldn't see carrying. Need to see about one this year actually and studying with a new Bushido instructor.

I picked up from a friend for $650 and then sent it to have a touch up polish done, another $450. Not sure of the maker but I think it is either a cut down from a longer damaged blade. Probably dates to about the mid 1800's.

If I was looking to buy a cheap katana to just play around with, I'd go with Cheness.  It seems to me that the value for money is probably higher with them than with other manufacturers.

That said, I am certainly not an expert on these types of blade, so my opinion is worth what you paid for it.

Just doing some quick internet research for info and reviews, I'd probably also go with Cheness' 9260 blades for a Katana in the $250 to $300 range, or a Wakizashi in the $200 neighborhood.  They've even got a 9260 Katana that they did the traditional heat treat method on.  The review indicates you shouldn't expect it to stand up to the extreme abuse their other 9260 blades can take, but that it can hold an extremely sharp edge.

DO WANT ! thanks for posting . Can't decide if I want an original or a new one that I wouldn't mind chopping things into tiny little pieces

i have one of their 9260 sgc ko katanas, it is a good value costs about the same as other companies wakis.

the edge is strong, so far it has cut through about 20 cardboard tubes with relative ease and no damage.

Couple of facts:

1.  I have absolutely no use for such a blade.

Exactly what I was thinking.  I would love to have one.  I'd get it home cut a few things with and then stick it in the closet and never use it again.

I have no use for over half the firearms I own.

I was hoping you would set up some rolled up tatami matts and do cutting tests on Box O Truth!

I've got an older CS Tanto, great knife.

The new CS stuff that I've seen doesn't excite me.

I've been a lot harder to please when it comes to blades since I got my first Spyderco.
