For most of my adult life I have been a fatbody and could not wear them, at least not comfortably and they didn't look very good on me. After losing a significant amount of weight, I can now wear them and have taken quite a liking to them now.

I was asking a female friend of mine about what kinds of shirts I should buy because none of my older clothes fit me anymore, her suggestion was you can't go wrong with a button down shirt, and the ladies like them too.

I am quite surprised that these shirts are rather reasonably priced too. So far my favorite brand is the JCPenny Stafford Classic brand. $18 for a nice dress shirt that can work with dockers or jeans is quite a deal.

I like perry Ellis and Calvin Klein button up shirts. I usually wait for them to go on sale. Can't go wrong with them.

Almost all my button down shirts come from Eddie Bauer.  Look for their wrinkle resistant oxfords.  They are great.  Plus they also have tall sizes which can be really hit or miss in most department stores.

Try Lands' End or L.L. Bean.  The SO is a big fan of Bean's winkle-resistant, 100% cotton oxfords for winter.  They're a little more expensive, but they come out of the dryer looking good and they have a little more body than other brands.

I wear Eagle dress shirts.  They are by far the nicest dress shirts for the price.  They also do not wrinkle as much as Polo, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.  They are not cheap (run about $50-60), but I get them on sale at Macy's for around $20-30.  I wear them to the office or when I am visiting customers.

Lands End and LL Bean shirts seem to have a much heavier feel to the fabric, very durable feeling shirts.  I am not much for ironing so my shirts will be headed to the cleaners for a good pressing. The $1.50 per shirt is well worth the price IMHO.

Too fat to wear button-up shirts?

Well, good job losing all that weight.

I wear them more now that I CC.
You do have to watch some brands as some run larger or smaller.
They look nice and are a huge step up from Polo's.

I'm a fan of button downs also, I have several from American Apparel and plan to order more in the near future.

I guess you mean casual sport shirt type?

Eddie Bauer, LL Bean, Brooks Brothers. These places pretty much dress me.

I like Eagle brand dress shirts from Macy's.  I also like Macy's Club Room brand.  They are cheap, but they look good.

For non-dress, I get shirts from Banana Republic and LL Bean

I wear a suit 5 days a week for work.

I don't wear button ups on my own time unless there is a special occasion.

Congrats on being smart enough to know you were too fat for button down shirts.  One guy I know can't figure that out.

I also like the Stafford shirts.  It's hard to go wrong with L.L. Bean too.

Oxford cotton breaths well and hides guns well.

It does wear out. I generally have about 10 shirts in my cycle. My shirts usually start getting bare patches on the elbows after a little over a year of wearing them.

I bought some of the 5.11 casual/dress shirts from La Police Gear when they were in the clearance bin.  They are quite nice.

+ elesomething billion on JC Penney Big and Tall.  I buy Vahausen Wrinkle Free button downs in short and long sleeve.  Most times they are under $20 each and fit great.  As for dress button downs I go to Nordson.

Babnana Republic actually has excellent dress shirts.  If you have the body to pull it off, their BR Monogram Slim Fit shirts are excellent.  Cut very well and comfortable.  I HATE american "classic" cut shirts that are essentially like wearing a cardboard box.

Or it says you gave up at trying to get dressed.

Button downs, not so much.

Huge fan of the button down shirt for all weather and seasons.  Linen in the summer, flannel for winter and a mix inbetween the two.  They conceal handguns well too.

Check out the St. John's Bay flannel shirts at JC Penney's, they're super soft, warm and are good quality.

I like Van Heusen for dress shirts, preferably the 'fitted' style.

The Traveler Wrinkle-free series from Joseph Banks are EXPENSIVE, but they sure launder well.

They come out of the drier ready to wear, and aren't wrinkled at the end of the day. When I wore a suit to work, my Oxford Cloth Button Downs were a wrinkled mess by the end of the day.

The Joseph Banks Shirts:

If you buy them, never pay full retail. They're on sale for about 50% off quite frequently.

take it from a guy who spent a lot of money on brooks brothers, jos a bank before they went mainstream, just stick with a department store permanent press button down shirt.  they look great after washing and won't wrinkle up on ya.

Don't wear a tie with a button collar shirt.
Flat cut around the bottom means its meant to be worn untucked, cut high at the sides means only tucked in.

Button-down is a reference to the collar. Like others have pointed out they are presently out of fashion.  Just slide them to the back of the closet.  Men's fashions always seem to come back around.

Does the OP just mean shirts with buttons?

ETA - I've had good luck at Burlington Coat Factory.  They seem to carry good quality stuff that are closeouts form other stores and cheap junk that is made for them.  I've found a bunch of shirts for $12 or so that the Men's Warehouse sells for $50.  Good deals on ties, belts and socks as well.  Their shoes were another story. Cheap crap.

I had the opposite problem. Being a beanpole, if I found a shirt that fit my neck and arms, I had enough material around the waist to make another shirt. One good thing about the emo effect on fashion is that shirts are being cut a little slimmer.

Mine all come from Cinch, Tommy, RL, and Ariat but I too like the look of the button up/down shirt. Clean cut and well dressed never goes out of "style" unless you're 20.

Polo/Ralph Lauren shirts are good quality for the money. They have several lines, Blue/Green/Black/Purple, but their standard blue labels can be bought on sale at your local dept store most times. Even better, if you have an outlet store nearby you can buy them for $25 a pop if you get lucky. For better quality you need to go with Brooks Brother's, their athletic line is a great looking/fitting shirt if you can wear it. You'll pay for the BB but with proper care they'll last years and years.

Now that I'm "skinnier" I'm wearing T-shirts again.

Brand isn't the that important IMHO. I like the JC Penny's you mentioned. Their Executive line is good too.

Fit is foremost, and I suggest a decent, stain resistant fabric. The other thing that matters is second button placement.

I wear shirts open collar a lot, and where that second button falls makes a world of difference.

Open collar (button down but no tie) and a jacket is a pretty good look, a power look. Says I'm important enough to wear a jacket, but you're not important enough for me to wear a tie.

Sounds cheesy when you say it, but clothes are either function or form. Anything I prefer to not get dirty is form...
