I bought a pull up bar from someone on Craigslist a while back. It's a full framed piece that sits on the floor. Rather than having a single bar across, it has two bars that come forward from the base and then curve outward. They are separated by over 20 inches. Personally I can hardly do any pull ups with my hands that far apart. I can do a hell of a lot more with my hands a bit closer together, so I frequently just use the bar on one side.

Do most people do pull ups with their hands that far apart? Am I cheating myself by not learning to do them the way it's designed for?

ETA: Here's a picture of what I'm talking about.

I've never understood the design of these thigs.

Two kinds of people can do a lot of wide grip chins-

Juice heads and genetic freaks who also do lots of pull ups.

No you're not cheating yourself.

I do wide pulls, narrow pulls, and narrow chins on mine.
I do 25 each at the end of my regular workout.
I am not a genetic freak or juicer.  Work out regularly, you'll be able to do the same
I'm 43, 5'9", 151 lbs.

I usually do pullups a few inches narrower than I normally bench press with on either side... So, holding my arms at 90*, I'd guesstimate my hands are about 22-24" apart when doing pullups.

That would be just about right for this thing.

When I do chin ups, I'll have my hands right next to each other, almost touching if not touching. Pull ups I prefer very close also, probably within 6 inches. When I try to do them out at 20+ inches, I feel like I can't get any leverage. On a good day I can do like three that way.

You are obviously on steroids.

I haven't been able to do 25 pull ups since I was in high school.  Of course I'm 6 feet and 218 pounds now so that makes it a little more difficult.

I do close, wide, shoulder width, chins and rings. I don't juice and they're better folks then me so I'm also not a freak, just been doing pullups most my life.

I can't go too wide or my shoulder will dislocate.

No roids, Isopure protein post-lifting, casein in the morning.
I drink beer and smoke cigarettes too.  Hell, I'm scared to try creatine.

You need to work your lats, traps, shoulders and deltoids.  If  you're able to do close grip pullups, your tris/bi's are beefy enough to move your body weight; Spreading the grip wider like that removes the work from the bi/tri and puts it on the aforementioned muscles.

Shrugs, shoulder press, bent rows and bench press should fix you right up.

Just work it up. I am 200lbs and 5'10"ATM and though I just started again I can get 20. Before the kids a weighed 215lbs and could get 25+ straight. Just a matter of doing them. To the OP, just slowly do what you can and keep on doing them. I would say slowly widen your grip but by the looks of it your station doesn't allow that option.

5-9. 151lbs.....I think genetic freak applies . A few years ago at 5-8 I lost to 159lbs and everyone thought I was dying.

You could try negatives.  Use a chair to start at the top, and slowly lower yourself down.  Get on the chair and do it again.  But I could see that causing shoulder problems on some people, so maybe not...
