Trying to set up a new wireless printer.  I'm a computer guy but networking isn't my thing.

I'm supposed to set up a broadcast SSID with the name of SETUP, change my communication mode to Ad-Hoc, change the wireless channel to 11, and turn off the encryption.

I have changed the SSID, changed the wireless channel, and, though it makes me nervous, I've turned off encryption.

Goddamn thing still can't see the printer.  The printer is on and verifies that wireless connectivity is on.  No setting in my Linksys control panel mentions ad-hoc and why should it?  I've been battling this printer for an hour and a half and am no closer to a solution.

What simple thing am I missing?

ad-hoc would be set at your computer.  By definition you can't have an ad-hoc network with an access point in the middle.

Are the settings temporary, or are they permanent?

edit: This is one of the reasons I have an Apple Airport Extreme as my router –– it doubles as a wireless print-server (and can have an external hard drive attached as network storage).

shove a cable into it so it can get a DHCP address from your router. Once that is done, browse to that address. I am assuming that it has a web interface that will allow you to change those assinine settings. Give it a static address on the wireless interface, remove cable.

Does the printer connect directly to the PC? or to the AP?

What type of printer?
