They're hiring.

The test is easy.

The pay is good. (think non-competitive promotion to GS-12 +25% overtime)

Man up or shut up.

Just don't be in a hurry.  If you get hired within six months of applying you sailed thru the process.  The Federal personnel system is............unique.

Tell me about it. I may or may not be going through a completely redundant security clearance investigation right now.

I've been in the process for over a year now. I think the average wait time is right around 600 days

Where are the testing locations?  Would I have to go to TX or AZ to take the test or do they have places in each state?  I was looking at the site today but haven't click the apply button yet to submit my application to find out the testing dates and locations.

They have testing sites all over. Most metro areas will have one. However, it depends on how late you sign up. If you wait too long into the hiring period, the most convenient sites will be all filled up.

I've been seeing around 500 on Honorfirst. A guy in my unit did it in less than 9 months.

I think that most of it has to do with any "hiccups" in your BI.

There are testing locations all over. I took my written test in State College, PA, my interview was in Maine, and I have to travel to DC soon for some other stuff.

Thanks for the info guys.  Since I can't join the Army I've been kicking around the idea of getting on in law enforcement.  I'm going to be applying for a deputy sheriff's position in a big county here and a recruit position in a large metro area in KY.  I was thinking about Boarder Patrol too.  I noticed a position for CPB officer listed in KY too but I figured that would probably be in the Louisville Airport and I'm not sure if that job sounds all interesting.

Why can't you join the Army?

Also, CBP has a butt load of announcements out all over, not just airports.

Logical reasoning, then you have your choice of taking a Spanish proficiency test or an artificial language test.

There are 3 parts.

Part 1 is a basic logical reasoning test.

Part 2 is a language test, either Spanish or an ALT (alternative language test) which will measure your ability to learn Spanish

Part 3 is just a skills assessment, and not really an academic test.

It is pretty darned easy, especially if you study the material that they provide you with when you fill out the application.

The cut off score for consideration is 70%.

I've never learned Spanish so I'd need the ATL.

I took high school Spanish, and didn't retain much, so I took the ALT.

They will send you a study guide in the mail with a practice ALT. Just study the shit out of the RULES of the language, because they will be the same as on the test.

Super easy.

When I was 19 I got a citation for possession of marijuana (this was 8 years ago).  Pled guilty, paid fines, did two years probation.  I've never been in trouble since got my shit together, yada yada.  But now due to recruiting numbers being so high the military isn't accepting drug waivers and probably wont be for some time.  Recruiters don't wont to waiste their time with me, which I don't blame them since there isn't anything they could do.  I've kicked around the idea about joining for a long time and ironically was going to before I got that charge, but couldn't do anything after that until my probation was over.  When it was over there was always some reason or another to put it off, like do another semester of school.  I guess I missed my window of opportunity.

Nothing extremely difficult, mostly deductive reasoning and things of that nature. Although the artificial language test is retarded. Either take the spanish language test or learn to speak Klingon. I took the test back in 08 before I got a promotion at my current job. I decided not to go into CPB. But I passed the test, trust me it is not that hard.

Oh, I know.  Border Patrol seems more appealing for some reason but I just noticed the CBP postings last night while I was at work and saw a posting for KY.  I would much rather get on with Border Patrol

If you're honestly interested, it's very likely that you could get the record stricken (expunged).  Especially, if you explain to the judge why you want to do it.

give me a fucking break.  the definition of futile is boarder patrol in this country.  when your own govt would rather support a bunch of non-citizen criminals the only thing to is well a CoC violation.

I'm normally not a spelling nazi, but since you're being a prick, I'd like to point out that if you have trouble mastering your first language (I'm assuming it's English), then you'll probably have trouble picking up another one. Therefore, you do not qualify and are not wanted.

Just skimming the hiring rules and eligibility. Did I read that the age limit has been dropped for veterans? I'm 46 and was AF security forces, now retired, and currently a civilian LEO. Am I eligible?

I don't know about this federal job.  But the last time I took a federal test, it was pretty much not worth applying if you were not female, a minority, or a veteran (or better yet a mix of those).  Those groups all got bonuses - I think I scored 96% and there was not a call back on my application.  A white male with a perfect score could not beat a special interest group with bonus points.

This doesn't seem to be like that at all. The only extra points given on the test are veterans preference points. They have a hard enough time getting people through the proccess, and need to make so many new hires, I don't anticipate it being an issue.

When the BP is hurting for people, they will end up taking guys who scored just the minimum 70%.

They take disabled vets. In fact, it qualifies you for a higher level of veterans preference. I don't think that the physical requirements are nearly as strenous as say, a deploying Army unit.
