Spring Mills, Pa. — An Aaronsburg bowhunter got a painful lesson in maternal instinct when a black bear attacked him in his treestand in woods along Upper Georges Road near here Oct. 18.

The hunter told officials he fell 15 feet from his treestand after tussling first with a cub and then its mother in the tree, just before dusk. Although the Pennsylvania Game Commission refused to release the man’s name, they described him as in his 20s and lucky to be alive

That's why I always carry a Swiss Army knife, with the corkscrew.

That's why some states (not Illinois) allow hunters to carry a defensive hand gun with them when bow hunting. I bet he will now legal or not!

Glad the hunter is ok. I would have shot the sow as soon as she started up the tree.

Me too And a different PA Bear.

Franklin, Pa. — Pennsylvania Game Commission officials recently announced that, based on their investigation, no charges will be filed against James Moore for killing a bear on Oct. 9.

"This is an unfortunate incident that resulted in the loss of a valuable wildlife resource,” said wildlife conservation officer Lawrence Hergenroeder, who conducted the probe.

"My investigation determined that Mr. Moore shot the 149-pound male black bear once with his compound bow and arrow, striking it on the right side as it was proceeding down a gas line road that would have taken it immediately in front of Mr. Moore and his daughter.

This is why (in addition to a cork screw) I carry a 357 magnum with me CCW when I hunt.
