So I was out on my lunch break looking at used cars.
A three year old (read 2007 model) Volvo S40 with 37k miles is being asked 17.9k for. Respectable number.
A four year old (read 2006 model) Hummer H3 with 96k miles is being asked 18.9k for. Holy Batshit, am I drunk, stoned, high, or head the man wrong? So I ask again, wait, 19 thousand dollars?
The man shakes his head yes.

I walk away. I understand you price used cars up a bit, but HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!!! You don't price them up to the fact that you scare people off.

Two years ago, I looked at two year old Hummer H3's with 30k miles on them for 15k.

Maybe I should just keep my 13 year old paid for truck.

Blue book with standard (no extras) package says $16,900.

You hit it with some extras and it quickly goes over $20,000.

I don't mean to be smug but the day you start looking at cars as a mere conveyance- a means to travel safely and reliably from point A to point B, and not as any kind of status symbol, you are on your way to a wealthier life.

YMMV-

Dollars are what you give to get nice things...

The worst thing I could have done was give myself a car payment. Stick with your paid for truck. You'll enjoy a new car for the first 6 months then start dreading the payments. I'm now selling my truck just to get a cheaper one.

I looked for 5 months for a 3/4 ton single cab ford or chevy to use around the ranch.
They were either beat to shit or way to much.

I gave up and bought gen. 3 night vision and an aimpoint T-1.

Unintended consequences.

Warnings were issued, summarily ignored.

the used market is nuts right now.

It's a good thing if you are planning on trading up on something new though

We're in a strange land here.  Used car values are through the roof, but at the same time there is a credit crunch and nobody has the money to just pay cash.  I see the same cars on Craigslist week after week, just sitting there in people's driveways, and meanwhile some of the cars I actually see driving around are in ridiculously poor condition.  Something's gotta give.

I almost retired my old 90's Camry at 150,000 miles...then I second thought and kept on driving her. Fuck it....Who am I trying to impress?

Are you a Comanche?

The Searchers
Ethan: No, a human rides a horse until it dies, then he goes on afoot. Comanch comes along and gets that horse up, rides him twenty more miles, then eats him.

(This is my philosophy on vehicles).
