The game developed out of Rugby, just like our game did.  The Canadians keep a few of the more arcane rules in place, whereas we do not.

In the CFL, if a field goal is no good, you can run the ball out of your own end zone, if you catch it, or (much more rare) you can kick the ball out of your own end zone.  I would think that you would do the latter only if the field goal attempt was the last play of regulation.

Montreal tried the field goal, but missed.

Toronto then kicked the ball out of the end zone, to try and have someone fall on the ball and send the game to overtime.

Montreal then kicked the ball back into the end zone, with an eye to scoring a single, to win 31 to 30.

Toronto then attempted to kick the ball back out of the end zone, to try and have someone fall on the ball and send the game to overtime.

Because Toronto "touched" the ball when they kicked it, the ball was still live.  Since the ball was live and it did not leave the end zone, when the Montreal player fell on it, it was a touchdown.  Extra point makes it Montreal 37, Toronto 30.

The game really did not matter because Montreal won the division two weeks ago and Toronto is in the playoffs as well.

Guess what, the get to play each other again this weekend, in the final game of the regular season.

The same is true for American football.

American and Canadian football developed together until the early 1900s when sweeping changes were made here in the US

Nicely done.
