[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Do you exercise? (Page 1 of 3)

As I've mellowed out with age and career, I've only been getting exercise through weekend/holiday recreational activities and walking to and from places to my vehicle.  Though I tend to use the stairs over the elevators.

Do you think exercise is really beneficial to your longevity or does it only make you feel better, with no effect on how long you live?

Or is the key to a long and healthy life just staying active, eating sensibly and doing crossword puzzles?

Weight train, cardio and martial arts.
10/21/2010 10:29:28 AM EDT
[#2]
I do cardio 4 - 5 times a week and strength training 2 - 3 times per week.

Weight train 5 days a week, cardio any time I am too sore to lift, supplement regularly, eat right and play hard.
10/21/2010 10:33:28 AM EDT
[#6]
Lift heavy 3x per week, not so heavy and loosen up 2x week, and walk at a brisk pace everyday.
10/21/2010 10:57:37 AM EDT
[#7]
Bike 3 days each week for the last year.  Started jogging last week.  Would like to work in weights over the winter.

[#8]
I ride my bike everywhere, walk everywhere else, and do marching band.

So while I don't exercise, I'm not really in bad shape. Just kind of skinny. Well, make that really skinny.

The problem is, I don't have much free time. And I don't want to live a lifestyle where I'm forced to spend twice as much money on food (if I do exercise, I tend to have to double calorie intake immediately).

Don't sweat it if you don't have time now, since you already do plenty of activity.  However, later down the line it will be a good idea to incorporate some lifting in your PT.

I do cardio and weights 5 times a week with Saturday being a long cardio day (usually long mtn bike ride). Wannabe Navy SO recruit after I graduate college...2 more years.

Weightlift 5-6 days a week, no cardio right now due to runner's hip
10/21/2010 11:04:59 AM EDT
[#12]
5 days on weights, with 15 minutes on the elliptical warm up. 1 day of dedicated cardio, but i'm usually doing something outdoors on the weekend.

Getting old sucks.

Right now the only excersize I am really getting is at physical therapy. I hope to change that when I am better.
10/21/2010 11:06:34 AM EDT
[#16]
I only weight lift and do strength training. I don't believe that cardio is healthy.

Cut and split firewood. Haul it and stack it.

Ignoring the limitless supply medical and scientific documentation and research available on the topic, what makes you think that?

Cardio and weights here too, except only cardio right now...  Injuries suck.  Joints aren't what they used to be.

While running for hours on end is a recipe for joint pain, everybody should be walking everyday and be able to complete a 5k jog without dying.

I work cardio and weights 4-5 days a week and am pretty healthy in general, my grandma never worked out a day in her life ate biscuits and bacon almost every day of her life for breakfast, and the rest of the time ate good ole southern food. she held a job until she was 86 so i dont know if working out prolongs your existence but i probably doesn't hurt.

Cardio 4-5x/week

Not terribly heavy weights 6-7x/week

Running will destroy your knees. Switch to biking or walking or swimming if you can.

I lift four days a week in the evening and do cardio six mornings a week––-2 runs, 2 swims, 1 long bike and 1 bike/run brick.

Ehh, I think everyone would be better served by doing a ton of strength training exercises for their legs.

Mountain bike 25-50 miles and swim 1-2 miles per week.

No it won't if you do it correctly.  I have been running for 25 years and my knees are in pretty good shape.

You can walk and do tons of strength training for your legs.  The walking even helps aid in recovery.

Cardio and weights, five or six days a week and I like to mix it up.  Had to scale back a bit this week, arthritis flare up in my hips and knees.  I've just been doing walking to keep things loose and did some upper body weights yesterday.  I'm having less pain now, but can still feel the heat from the inflammation so still going to go easy for a few more days.

Cardio & Weights but the real workout...Power Yoga

During the spring,  summer, and fall I mountain bike 50-70 miles a week.   All year round I swim 1.5 hours with the family once a week, about 45 minutes of laps and 45 minutes of general play.  During the winter I add some callisthenics (sp?) a couple times a week and ride a bike trainer in the basement for 1/2 hour once or twice a week.

Monday wednesday and friday Weight training. saturday and sunday running.

Just turned 50 @175lbs and benching 205 for 6 reps now...

Run every 3rd day, calisthenics and weights the day before that, plus I have a very physical job. Still not in as good of shape as I'd like to be, though I did just score perfect on my last physical fitness test at work.

For most people, running destroys cartilage and will slowly, but surely damage the bones and joints. Ask people who've got shin splints and fucked up knees and bad hips how much running helped them. Or the people who drop dead in their 40s and 50s because of running how it's been to them.

It's far healthier for someone to build up fast twitch muscle and strengthen the bones and connective tissues with strength training.    You'll have much better balance and be much less susceptible to injury.

for the last 3 weeks I've gone to the gym 3-4 times a week.

Start on the treadmill, and finish with weights.

I get my exercise at the dojo - there was not a real option for martial arts....sparring is great cardio

Yeah, I am so sure that if someone dies of a heart attack in their 40s it MUST be because they ran, not because they had a genetic heart problem or a bad diet...yeah, sure...

Not since my daughter was born 3 months ago.

I'm an embarassed couch potato who has put on 10 pounds of pure blubber that I can actually feel while sitting down.

I do a mix of light weights and cardio 3x a week, ~30 mins of weights and 60 minutes of cardio.  Managed to lose 30 pounds since January doing that.  I used to go 4-5x a week but it was leaving me too exhausted and with no free time to play.  I don't need to look like a Mr. Olympia, I'm kosher with quasi-athletic/not-a-fatty.

I'm shooting to dump another 10 pounds realistically, I'll get there.  Already back into my skinny pants.    The men in my family seem to have heart attacks in the late 50s to early 60s, so I'm looking to avoid that fate.  Blood pressure hovers in the prehypertension area, likely from a mix of work stress and too much sodium.

The biggest help to my health was ejecting my ex-gf from my life.  She used to bitch about me going to the gym all the time.  She went from a 130 when started dating to 230 when I ejected last year and she's well on her way to 300 now.
10/21/2010 12:11:51 PM EDT
[#45]
I walk 2.5 miles in the morning, six days a week, and another mile in the evening 7 days a week.

Getting two big dogs has really gotten me off the couch.

It's not cardio but it has helped.  I need to start doing some weight / strength training.

I was doing Bikram Yoga (hot yoga) every day for a while... got up to 483 classes in 481 days before being sidelined with a stress fracture in my foot. Have been out for a couple of months waiting for my foot to heal up..

Yes. I leave for basic in 2 weeks and I'm trying to hit at least 280 on the APFT before I get there. I'm at 254 as of 2 weeks ago.
10/21/2010 12:20:37 PM EDT
[#48]
Yes, if you consider fork-to-mouth to be an exercise.
10/21/2010 12:22:18 PM EDT
[#49]
I started training for a 5-K 4 weeks ago.  Before that I played soccer.
10/21/2010 12:22:57 PM EDT
[#50]
I did a lot of exercise in the months leading up to my APFT.  Mainly just situps and running.  Pushups are easy.  But I seem to be developing shin splints in my right leg, so I'm going to take it easy on the running now that I passed the test.  I had to run with a painful leg for about a month.  It wasn't bad enough to slow me down, but it did hurt.
