I don't need help solving it but rather I need some explaining. x=6 +-sqrt 12/6. I looked at the answer and it was 1+- 1/6 sqrt 12. I'm just curious as to why it wouldn't be x= 1+-sqrt 2? I am having trouble because 12/6=2, and 6/6 =1. Anyway just hoping for some clarification.

Are you saying the problem is x = 6 +- ( sqrt(12)/6) or x = 6 +- (sqrt(12/6))?

The correct answer is x=1 plus or minus 1/6 square root 12. I was wondering why it couldn't be x=1 plus or minus sqrt 2?  The actual last step before reducing to the current answer has my problem as 6 plus or minus  the square root of 12 over 6.

A simpler way of expressing "12 / 6" would be "2"

What is the original problem?

Correct, however when it is sqrt of 12 over 6 why does it become 1/6 plus or minus sqrt 12.

The original problem is 3x^2-6x+2=0. I just input this in to the quad formula and am needing some explaining as to why the answer was what the book says it is. College text is about the same as a fucking quran worthless.

x=(-(-6)±√(62 - (4)(3)(2))/(2)(3)
x=(6±√(36 - 24))/(6)
x=(6±√12)/6
x=1± (√12)6  or another way to write it x=1± (1/6)(√12)
(If i remember HS algebra from 25+ years ago...)
The (√12)6 is different than √(12/6).  One is .577 the other is 1.414.  Dont forget the order of operations.

Edit- screw not being able to work ALT keys...√ is the freaking square root sign.

Rewrite sqrt(12) as 2sqrt(3).

ETA
Or do this:
Quoted:
x=(-(-6)±√(62 - (4)(3)(2))/(2)(3)

x=(6±√(36 - 24))/(6)

x=(6±√12)/6

x=1± (√12)6  or another way to write it x=1± (1/6)(√12)
