| I have been taught never attach a 540 to a 1000 RPM, or vice versa. Now I have a question in my class that asks what would cause less damage a 540shaft to 1000 implement, or 1000 shaft to 540 implement. My first impression was they are marked 6 spline and 21 spline so I don't think they can be hooked up correctly. Also, a 540 shaft to 1000 implement would be less damage I would assume because of less RPMS going to the implement than its max, where as the other is dang near double. |

Here is an answer to the question RE: a tractor that has a two speed PTO using the same output shaft

Happy to help. Can you just use an adaptor? I thought most tractors could run both PTO speeds. No? Well the question was "Neither is safe or advisable, but what would do less damage. A 540 implement to 1000 shaft, or 1000 shaft to 540 implement. Explain your reasoning." I stated 540 shaft to 1000 implement as it was half max rpm, where as other option was double max. I further stated splines prevent this, but if for some reason a farmer decided to interchange the stub shafts to a 540 and ran it at 1000 rpm it would be bad news. Only possible way I could think of this being possible. I know they have adapters but usually they have reducers, through gear ratios. |

dang, thought this was a thread about Paid Time Off. Now I gotta call HR anyway... I came in here expecting the Pacific Theater of Operations, saw RPMs, read what I thought was "attack", and figured "hot damn! Another WWII aircraft thread!" Stupid tractors. |

My mistake, but tractors are by far one of the best modern inventions one day I am going to drive one to my university and take up student parking. |
