There is no show with out the time bandit and the NW...

Jonathan and Andy Hillstrand have bigger fish to fry now.

The Deadliest Catch stars and captains of the deep-sea power scow Time Bandit, announced Tuesday that they're leaving the hit series after being sued for breach-of-contract by the Discovery Channel.

And they're taking fan favorite Sig Hansen, captain of the Northwestern, along with them.

"We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately
given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue
participating in Deadliest Catch," the three crab fishermen said in a joint written statement, first obtained by the Hollywood Reporter.

"It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive Catch fans we have met over the years."

In response to the lawsuit, Hansen said, "I want people to know the
captains stand together, and me and my brothers support them 100
percent."

Discovery says, meanwhile, that its announcement on the status of all three captains is forthcoming.

The network sued the Hillstrand brothers for $3 million, claiming
they failed to come through on their promise to shoot a spin-off
special, Hillstranded. Cameras rolled during business hours,
but Discovery says the crab catchers didn't make time to record
voiceovers and otherwise take part in what was needed to round out the
production.

Production on season seven of Deadliest Catch is scheduled to start early next month, the beginning of crab season.

While there was obviously a red sky at morning situation as far as
the Hillstrands were concerned, Hansen's departure is more of a
surprise, despite his statement of solidarity.

The show's sixth season was memorably rocked by the death of Cornelia Marie Capt. Phil Harris

No surprise there.

When Discovery sued, it was all over.

You can watch Keith on the Wizard if you want - I won't be investing any more time with DC.

Pretty dumb of discovery to F*(& with thier cash cow captains via lawsuit.  Someone at discovery should be fired.

I enjoyed the show , and watched from the first season. It's pretty much played out right now anyway. Each season is just more or less a repeat of last (except Phil this season) . It was time to move on anyways.

It's about fricken time. How much more hauling crab out of the icy northern Pacific and non stop bitching can people take?
I liked it the first season but it got old pretty fast.

I have searched to find better answers about this over the last few weeks when I first heard about the lawsuit but no one is talking. From what I have found everything was filmed except for this final editing/voice over work. Something happened during the filming of the raw material that pissed the bros off.

I don't understand how they managed to make a series out of it in the first place.  Should have been a single 2-hour documentary at most.

Honestly, Phil was my favorite skipper.  After he died, I lost interest in the series.  I didn't watch his final show or the rest of the series after.  I thought they would do Phil a disservice by making a spectacle of his death.

It's a reality show, so it is all about the drama and tension between the various people on the show.

I agree with the others that the show had pretty much run its course and was about to be over anyway.  I support the Captains and will delete the show from my to do list on the DVR.

I lost interest after the first couple episodes.  I'm sorry, but its the same stuff over and over again.  Guys throw the pots overboard, guys haul the pots back up,  the captains yell every so often and chain smokes and drinks coffee.  They do it in shitty weather, they do it in slightly less shitty weather.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

And then the spinoffs about lobsters and swordfishing.  Yawn.

Phil wanted "an end to the story" (his own words right before he passed).  The final episode and tribute shows were an amazing look at a life few could imagine.  I laughed... I cried.  Phil was one of a kind and touched a LOT of people in his life.  It was worth watching, it really was.

As for what's going on now... there's got to be a lot behind the scenes that we're not hearing about.

Without Phil, Sig and Hillstrands I think the show's over.

Well, it was a great ride while it lasted.

Why was it a series? Because nobody died, sank, or fell overboard during the documentary. The cold hard truth is that someone was eventually gonna die or get seriously injured, and the camera crews were going to be there to catch it in high def. Every season that it didn't happen was a guarantee of demand for another season. "Just one more," like voyeuristic junkies, we eat it up like anticipating a really big wreck in a Nascar race.

That's why it was a series.

Multiple ships sank and lives lost during the filming of the series. There was one rescue operation where 1 man of 6 was saved. This guy later worked on the North Western I believe. But I don't think any of the "star" boats had issues. Its hard to tell but in the wiki link it mentions a boat that had problems and there was a film crew aboard but no footage aired. The Vixen I believe.   I remember a small segment of the last season where they talked about how many folks had died during the filming of the series, not necessarily the show??

Yeah. It's educational to see how things are done, like crab fishing, ect.  But I'm not into watching a series about any of it.

Reality TV is cheap & profitable.

The Disco channel CEO deserves the credit (blame) for the whole trainwreck.

David Zaslav sets the strategy and oversees all operations of the world’s number one nonfiction media company that empowers people to explore their world and satisfy their curiosity. Discovery Communications’ 100-plus TV networks reach more than 1.5 billion cumulative subscribers in over 170 countries and its websites attract more than 35 million combined unique visitors per month.

Since taking the helm at Discovery in January 2007, Zaslav has executed a number of initiatives that have focused the organization on growth, performance and operational efficiency. He directed a strategic effort to clarify and strengthen Discovery’s world-class brands, highlighted by a partnership with Oprah Winfrey to launch OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, a multi-platform joint venture coming to 67 million homes in late 2009 or early 2010 with a mission to empower, entertain and uplift. He launched Planet Green, Discovery’s cross-company initiative committed to documenting, preserving, and celebrating the planet including the only 24-hour eco-lifestyle TV network. He also drove Discovery’s digital media strategy through the acquisitions of HowStuffWorks.com, the leading online source of high-quality, unbiased, and easy-to-understand explanations of how the world actually works, and Treehugger.com, the leading eco-lifestyle website.

Prior to Discovery, Zaslav had a distinguished career at NBC Universal. As president of Cable and Domestic TV and New Media Distribution, Zaslav oversaw content distribution to all forms of TV, led negotiations for cable and satellite carriage of NBC Universal networks, and forged innovative new-media partnerships, including a pioneering video-on-demand deal with the leading cable operator, Comcast. Zaslav also brought films and TV shows to consumers through new paths including the Internet, cell phones and other wireless devices.

Zaslav joined NBC in 1989 and was instrumental in developing and launching CNBC that same year. He played a key role in creating MSNBC in 1996. His responsibilities extended to Bravo, CNBC World, SCI FI, ShopNBC, Sleuth, Telemundo, Telemundo Puerto Rico, mun2, Trio, Universal HD, USA Network, NBC Weather Plus and the Olympics on cable. Zaslav also oversaw NBC Universal’s interests in A&E, The History Channel, The Biography Channel, National Geographic International, the Sundance Channel and TiVo.

Before joining NBC, Zaslav was an attorney with the New York firm of LeBouef, Lamb, Leiby & MacRae. He graduated with honors from Boston University School of Law. Zaslav serves on the boards of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, The Cable Center, Center for Communication and the Ad Council. He also is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Paley Center for Media and the Mt. Sinai Medical Center, and previously served as an adjunct professor at Fordham University, where he created and taught a graduate-level course on the business of cable television.

In 2007, Zaslav received a Trustees Award for Lifetime Achievement from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
