Has anyone figured out which of these products is worth having yet? I need to get my wife an anniversary gift and am leaning toward one of these.
Any opinions on which are worth having? |

I have a sony laptop, will the ipad do all the same things? What are the limitations? How does the Lenovo compare? 1. Not really. 2. Very much a consumer gadget at this point. 3. the Lenovo X series blows the iPad out of the proverbial water. No comparison. if she shows off her new Lenovo X series to her friends.. they will be like yeah what ever . if she show off her ipad.. she will get oohs and awwsss |
|
What do you want to do with it? Are you already using iTunes for your iPhone/iPod? Are you fine with a consumption only device? Do you need the large iPad screen or can you live with a 7"? Do you want a full fledge computer that can run flash and do a bunch of other sutff, a 7" Android tablet that can run flash and do other stuff, or a iPad that can't run flash and is encumbered by the Apple walled garden?
Is all you want to do is read ebooks? Then get a Kindle. Do you want an additional monthly data subscription or not? Right now, the iPad is the only high-end tablet that has a wifi only version, but the RIM PlayBook out next year will also have one. The Galaxy Tab requires a 3G monthly data plan. |

Windows 7 with multitouch? FAWK! |

I do know that she has the new blackberry, she has an ipod, I don't know what a consumption only device is, she would read ebooks, the bigger screen would be better, don't know what running "flash" is , and I don't know why we would have an additional monthly data subscription. I'm sure you are shaking your head right now, but that's ok. There's a reason I asked which way to go. It's because I don't know and don't want to piss $5-600 down the drain trying to be a hero. We have several computers and she's a photographer by trade. I think she'd use it to show proofs to customers and she's a big reader. Couple those things with surfing the web and I think she'd be happy. |

Good color reproduction is crucial. iPad does not have ICC support, meaning her proofs will look like shit. Tough call. My Lenovo W700 has a xrite color calibrator built in, but it is far from a tablet. |

| Just get the wifi iPad and be done with it. Each gadget has its up sides and down sides. The iPad is a decent piece of kit and she will not use what ever you do get her to it's full capability anyway. As to apples walled garden she will never use anything outside that wall anyway. |

But if she wants to show clients proofs, the iPad as yet has no color management, and your images once adjusted for print look exact on a color calibrated screen. Depends on what she needs it for. |

The absolute worst thing about the Ipad is not being able to visit flash websites. Kinda weird being that's what the things for anyways, surfing the Internet.
I have one by the way, it's a fantastic little machine, the fit and finish is great and, i like the aluminum construction. There are probably tablets just as good or better coming down the pike but I'm not sure. They are perfect for vacationing. There are some nice productivity apps for it that are quite nice, Numbers and Pages if you need to do a little work as well. |

Archos has a 10.1" tablet coming soon, should be shipping mid-October... which has a more sane price.
It's a 10.1" capacitive touch screen that runs Android 2.2 (might come with 2.1 and upgrade, the verbiage on a review video I saw wasn't too clear). It has WiFi, Bluetooth, a front facing VGA camera, micro SD card slot, USB host port, USB slave port, and HDMI out. The 8GB version will be around $299, the 16GB version will be around $349. I've actually seen one place that has them up for pre-order. The 8GB was about $279, IIRC. It doesn't have a cellular/3G/4G connection, but 'I don't care'. I can just tether to my phone. I actually regret it not having GPS more than not having a mobile data connection. Most of what I use a mobile computer for now are web based. I'm going to sell the netbook and use the tablet for that role. I'm close enough to a desktop computer at home and at work (where we are not restricted from anything) that I don't need any considerable mobile computing power. |

the Rim Playbook or the Samsung Galaxy Tablet would be where its at...the sammy unit is high on my list. The iPAD is for douche bags and people who care more about their social status than anything else That's a goober statement. They were the first of their kind, people liked the idea and, purchased them. Social status? I needed a new laptop and didn't want to spend a grand so I bought one. I discovered this would fit me better being, I work on a different computer and only wanted something I could surf the web with. |

Doesn't include the Archos I mentioned... Another I would love to consider would be the Notion Ink Adam, but they've been delayed. The cool feature they will have is the PixelQI display, which turns off the backlight to look like an e-ink display. Great for reading on. |

I haven't even picked it up from Best Buy yet. Thanks for the info. I plan on picking up my own at some point in the future so I'll be keeping that info in mind. |

Ipad kicks ass. However if your wife likes reading get her a kindle. I have gotten several people I know Kindle's and they love them. IPad is a good product though I got one through work from our IT guys to play with which means it is now mine Is there ANY way to see flash content on the iPad? |

My Lenovo W700 has a xrite color calibrator built in, but it is far from a tablet. I do a lot of digital photography. I don't do much post processing on the Ipad but I have taken shots, transferred to the Ipad and than used it for storage and I have printed directly off it with my epson 7900 stylus pro and it looks great. I haven't done any comparisons to Ipad screen to my mac or PCs at home yet but I imagine for a client that is willing to look at proofs on a computer screen it would work well. I am guessing there may be better tablets out there for that use case but what they would be I don't know and I am pretty sure she'd do just fine with the Ipad. You need to have a discussion with her about what she does her post shoot processing on. I am very picky about my photos. If I were you I'd find a price range and go with her to a computer store or apple whatever and let her shop for what she needs. Photographers always have something in mind when it comes to the next piece of gear they want. you'd be better off surprising her with a shopping trip. |

Anyone that is willing to examine proofs on a tablet, any tablet is not going to be discerning enough to know the difference between and Ipad or super dooper tablet's color rendition. I don't know of many very serious art departments or customers that are looking at stuff on a tablet type device to make the final call. And photos/graphics look shit hot on an Ipad. |
| Love my iPad. No other viable product in it class has been released. Lots of " next year" and " it will be cool". Limitations, yes. But I rarely use my laptop anymore. The pad is just too convenient. No boot time, excellent graphics. Apps for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations. Tons of apps for fun. And it does have the wow factor. |

I've got the 64GB ipad with the data plan and it's pretty awesome for most low to mid level use (web, facebook, short emails, docs, reading, etc). It doesn't replace a computer, but I'd say for the average user it would replace 95% of what they would do on a full machine. you can also get USB connectors and memory card attachments for the iPad to allow her to bring photos from a shoot over to proof on a larger screen if she wanted to. It looks like the HP will be the way to go long term, but 1st gen products are always risky. |

All I wanted from a laptop was mobile internet on a big screen and the ability to sync my videos, music and e-mail seamlessly. My iPad does all of that, and it's smaller, and lighter than a laptop. Yes, the whole no Flash thing sucks (Jobs can be a dick sometimes), but otherwise, I love it. Of course, now my GF wants one.

My Dad (84) got my mom (74) an iPad for her birthday. She likes it. Easy to carry around the house and use in different places. I think for her, email, internet and books are the main uses. There are obviously a ton of apps and it will run iPhone apps etc. Video and music are great too.... Netflix etc.. Battery lasts all day Heck, since my wife got an iPhone, she uses that over a laptop a lot of the time. I don't see how. If she had an iPad I bet we'd ditch the laptop. |
A friend of mine is the liaison between the factory in China where Apple makes their products and Apple, he said that the Gen 2 will be 10X better than Gen 1 and not to even bother with the Gen 1 but I am really digging them. I just have to wait till spring now. I my just go ahead and get me a new iPod Touch to hold me over.

Hopefully the first gen iPads will drop in price. Personally, for the level of functionality, they are ridiculously priced. That Galaxy Tab as well. I think $300 is a good price for an average featured model. No more than $500 for the top end, and maybe $200-250 for a stripped down version, or smaller screen versions. Hell, for $100-150, I'd like to get a 7" model with WiFi and a capacitive touch screen to use as a remote controller for the HTPC and the home automation stuff. |
