No, he is just a person we hire to run the place for a few years. His subordinates must respect him as the employees respect the CEO of a company but the people that put him in charge owe no respect. He is a president, a public servant, not a king, queen or god that requires a special respect.

If he spoke first, I would politely return the greeting. If he asked a question beyond "how're you doing?" or the like, I would decline to answer. And if he didn't speak first, I would pass.

I shook his hand a while ago when I met him. Despite not liking him or his politics, I talked to him for about 30 seconds, and was polite and respectful. I can be an adult and not drop down to petty insults to blow up my own ego.

Oh, now I'm a goofball.

When Obama visited Afghanistan, he came into our DFAC when I was eating dinner. They took all our rifles away, and then he came in and went down the line of about 30 of us. He stopped and talked to us one at a time. He asked me my name, where I was from, how long I'd been deployed (11 months at the time) and how I was holding up. I responded in a civil manner that it was "tough being away from family for so long, but it's worth it to get the job done."

Bullshit. This isn't a monarchy. Contrary to popular belief, president does not equal king. So there is enough of a majority of morons, coupled with a corrupt enough system, to vote him into office. Fine. But taking that a step further and saying I have to respect that because I was born on soil he now (somewhat) controls is like the Brits thinking they owe fealty to the monarch. If that were my lot, my ancestors would have stayed in freaking Scotland to begin with.

Yup. The political classes and their Praetorian guard do not trust the hired help. Sadly, that's what the average honorable guy or girl serving in the military is viewed as by the political elite. Hired Help.

I specifically was not saying you are a goofball. I was supporting the idea that it's probably not BS that you shook the hand of the Kenyan. Hell, my sister has shaken his hand inside the Whitehouse. You, Capt-Planet, are in uniform and you are obligated to be respectful and nice to the Kenyan. You should live up to that obligation. Still, do you not think that some of the hands that the Kenyan shook the day he shook yours were in fact attached to goofballs?
