I have carried rifles many times in the woods while hiking etc.

Never an AR though, I prefer other types usually an AK.

+1

"open carry" if you mean hunting, or being in areas where there might be something worthy of a cartridge?  yep.   Really, whenever I take the AR somewhere it's ready to go and over my shoulder.   But I am low-speed, high-drag so if I am going to scare the Sheeple, I revert back to a CCW'd handgun.

I do sometimes out in the wilderness.  I need to get an SKS for an open-carry rifle, people would probably be less intimidated by it and there wouldn't be any question of the legality of it.

Groundhog hunting only I am afraid.  If I carried an AR around my neighborhood..say just walking for exercise, I am sure the county sheriff would have a car there pronto to ask me what the hell I am doing.  Too much drama involved to make a statement about lawful open carry.  Would be interesting to go hiking on public land with limited possiblity of interaction with other hikers and see what happens.  Perfectly legal I believe, but wonder how fast the county mounties would roll?

When I was a member at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club, there was a regular there that would ride his motorcycle across the city to shoot, with an AK or AR slung across his back.

in phoenix metro area i don't. When im out fishing or hiking or camping or at the cabin i always have a rifle on my back. I don't own an AR YET but i usually carry the ak or the sks around with me. Up near my cabin at the small towns ill go in for a drink at the little local bars or whatnot and just lean it up against the chair next to me and nobody seems to look twice at it unless they want to check it out.

I think carrying a rifle in the city would be a hassle. It's not illegal but it would be so unusual I would not want to deal with every passing cop stopping to question why I am doing it.

Some people applaud him for his exploits, but he explicitly stated that he painted the tip orange to give him an "edge" on police as they debated whether or not it was a real firearm, giving him the jump if he needed it, with his AP ammo that he was asking about for months before the incident where he OC'd in a national park in TN and was detained for suspicious activity.

ETA: Then he painted it all orange.

How can you NOT be looking for the wrong kind of attention strolling around with a blaze orange AK strapped across your chest?

No, he is showing that an orange will CAUSE an LEO to pause...its a bad law for that.  Some in our society will crucify an LEO who shot a person with a fake gun because the tip was orange...that ass-hole cop should have known better.  Now lets take a criminal who paints his tip orange and all we see is a dead LEO and we wonder how he died or why he didn't shoot.  Shit, if I was a criminal I would paint my barrel tip orange too....that extra 1/2 could be what i need to win the fight...alls fair right.

Yea, but he was a self proclaimed gun rights activist that "did nothing wrong" not "technically" a criminal, in his own words...
