I've got a wee bit of a problem...

It's been three years since I started up my then-brand-new Echo weed whacker. It won't start.

I'm wondering.... If the fuel-oil mixture has too much oil in it, would this be a cause?

The unit has been stored (empty) in a garage all this time.

Thanks.

Sorry, but I'm sorta new to the whole 2-stroke engine thing.

I would start by replacing the  spark plug.

It's brand new. I only used this thing once.

As for the oil mixture, it should be 50:1. I'm afraid I went quite a bit heavier than that.

Replace the plug.  Drain out the fucked up mix, mix up some good fuel, try 'er again.

When you drained it prior to storage, did you run it dry or just dump out the gas tank?  They need to be run dry, or else the whole point of draining the fuel is lost.

The old fuel may have gummed up the carb.

NM: Read you stored it empty.

I don't really remember for sure, but I'll do as you said anyway.

I sorta remember letting it run dry. Been a LONG time.

Thanks.

take out plug, drain the rest of that shit form the fuel system, cleanse everything with gas/ or carb cleaner.

Put in new plug, prime well with new gas at correct mix,

pull that fucker until it starts

eta:
just pre-empted by the above poster.. but:
.....
drain it. Rinse with straight gas. Drain that.
Air out or use gentle compressed air for drying of tank.

Fresh fuel mix.
Prime. Choke,  or 1/2 Choke. Little throttle. Start. Warmup, then , Choke off. Trim.

Invoice to follow.

Cheers and beers.

Roger that.

Off to drain right now before something bad happens.

Thanks.

Does it have an on/off switch?  Did you press the priming bulb several times and set to full choke before pulling it through?

But, IMHO, it sounds like you have some dried varnish covering your filter screen in the carb.

I would drain the tank, and refill with fresh mix.  Do it right this time.  Hit the primer ball a few times.  If it doesn't want to work, leave it be for a while then try it again.

You may get lucky and the fresh gas will dissolve the gum and she will start to run again.

I did that once.

I was cussing up a storm trying to get a leaf blower started, forgot to turn the switch to on.

I've done it with a weed eater before, that's why I said it.    That, and he only used it once a couple of years ago, so he isn't familiar with it.

I did that first thing this summer.  My Echo 225 has a cutout switch on the handle, I yanked on the cord for ten fucking minutes before I realized it was "off".

Are you sure it doesn't have an on/off switch?  How do you turn it off?

ETA:  What is the model # ?

This should clear your problem you definately want to start with fresh fuel and the right mix...

You probably know this already, but after you prime it, set carb to "Cold start", and yank 3 times, you're supposed to switch to "Hot start".

Mine's two years old.  It takes 3 pulls on "Cold", then fires off on the first "Hot" pull.  It's worked like that since new.
