He has heard Panther arms are the best. Help me try to convince he can get a better gun for the same price. He is looking for a flattop, to mount a scope. I have mentioned Spikes, Colt, Larue, and Knight. Not really cheaper than the Dpms.

ETA. What will be the purpose of said rifle?

Stag?

It seems that RRA, DPMS, and Stag seem to be the brand you hear and see. Alot of shops have, then of course they inflate the price of the rifle. I'll stick with LMT, they're just as good as Colt, but cheaper and they go through the standard that Colt meets, that and the SOPMOD just makes it better.
Link Posted: 9/1/2010 8:59:38 PM EDT
Leave him alone and just be glad he's not an anti. The DPMS will be fine.

THis.

Eta: or help him build one

My RRA's worked pretty well, but then again, when I bought it there weren't that many companies making middys in my price range.

Stag makes the best rifles for the price, tell him to go that route.

Actually, DPMS makes some really nice varmint rigs. Might be where he is coming from.

For a traditional M4-type setup, clearly there are better choices at all price points. I'd push Spike's for probably less than a DPMS carbine.

I would not spend $$ on a Colt rifle (unless the price was well below market)... but I will spend $$ on LMT or LaRue!

Yeah, I tried to talk my buddies Army father out of a Judge, but I didn't get very far either.

The Spikes M4 for $800 with sights and two Pmags is hard to beat.

Sometimes there is no convincing people. I have a buddy that just bought an S&W M&P for $1900. I told him not to do it, that I could find him a way better deal, or a much better rifle for the money, but he came over with it about two hours later.

I have never bought a complete AR, just stripped lowers that I build in about 30 minutes and a good quality upper in the style I want.

Cheaper and built how I want it the first time.

Tell him to quit drinking the DPMS cool-aid and do some research.

I really like my Spikes lower, despite the FCG pins walking out after two mags, but the whole Obama fiasco thing was icing on the cake. No more for me.

Sounds like a good way to get yourself the dead. Spikes may make a good gun, but that little stunt they pulled after the election is and was bs. When I buy another stick, it will be a Stag or Colt.

I love my spikes lower, but fuck man that sucks. I could care less about the Obungo thing, I just shop somewhere else. That would blow my mind if my pins walked out though. Hope you got her all fixed up for free.

They didn't walk completely out, not enough to cause a malfunction, but enough to not be normal. It's an easy fix at least.

This is a Spikes assembled pistol lower with whoevers lpk they use. I haven't actually fixed it yet. Just haven't shot that lower. I'm either going to get some KNS pins or some new milspec FCG pins.

Shit, that right there explains the price! MF&S is MSRP+20% It seems. Hell, CDNN has had M&P15's for $599. I even built up my Noveske barreled AR for around 2k. I am always up late nowadays, been playin lots of MW2 and checkin arfcom.

His money is his money. Let him sped it like he wants.

If what he buys is fucked up, help him fix it. If it ain't, eat a little of your own crow.

For what he is looking to do with it I fail to see the problem with him buying a dpms rifle so long as the price is fair. My brother's ran very well and was pretty accurate. If he's wanting to shoot them at longer ranges, my suggestion would be a bolt action rifle (22-250 puts them down pretty well ). If he's calling them in close then he should have no problems with an AR.

Oh I definetly will.
As far as the other comments. He has heard Bushmaster is the worst. They are not the greatest I know from experience, but definetly not anywhere near the worst.

BTW: He is next to me and wanted me to back up my word that DPMS are not the best. I am not saying they are the worst either. I have shot a bull barreled one with no FA and it seemed to shoot fine, just not as good as others.

I owned a DPMS....at one time. Sold it, would never purchase again. Both upper and lower fit were not the greatest and the finish was horrible (think spray can with multiple coats without drying time)

Just not a fan.

Who told him DPMS was the best???

Personally, I'd own a (newer production) DPMS rifle if I got it for the right price. If he is wanting to go pay full retail at a box store, his money could be spent on a superior product for the price. However, I'd have to swap the bbl for something with a 1:7 twist, but that's just my preference.

ETA: As for Bushmaster, that was the first firearm I ever purchased. A 16" M4A2 carbine. It now sports a Colt 20" bbl with a UBR. I've never had any issues with it.
