Dammit! The Wild Geese [:)]
Quoted: Ghandi View Quote You have an interesting view of war. |
Quoted: Force 10 from Navarone View Quote Yeah, I've got to agree with this one. . . the tension of the dam bursting alone is worth the view. Otherwise: "Saving Private Ryan" - Tension and Heroism "Gallipoli"- Friendship and Heartbreak "Glory" - Humanity and Compassion |
1) The Cross of Iron
2) Gettysburg 3) Go Tell the Spartans 4) Stalingrad 5) Blackhawk Down 6) Pork Chop Hill ...these only add to the lists. |

Something which hasn't been posted yet.
Midway Siege at Firebase Gloria (got to love Lee Ermey) |
How about "Kellys Heroes" "Hamburger Hill" and "The Eagle Has Landed"
Is Paris Burning?
I love it when Hitler screams into the un-attended telephone at the end. The score, written by Maurice Jarre, is absolutely haunting. |
I know its not really a war movie, but I also love:
The Man Who Would Be King Zulu Because of these movies I will one day have to buy a Martini rifle. |
Let's not forget:
The Odd Angry Shot The Lighthorsemen The Big Red One Also "Farewell to the King" - it isn't a war movie in the classical meaning, but it's still a good one. |
Although not in my top 10, I liked "Three Kings"
also "The Bridge over the River Kwai" is worth a mention. |
In no particular order:
----------------------------------------- Battle of the Bulge The Great Escape Where Eagles Dare The Patriot Braveheart Blackhawk Down Saving Private Ryan For fun: Rambo II & III For fantasy: Red Dawn Coming soon: The "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy |
only ONE mention of Braveheart??
[%(] Mine would be (in no order) Braveheart The Patriot We Were Soldiers Blackhawk Down Band of Brothers (sure, it's series, not a movie) The Longest Day Saving Private Ryan A Bridge Too Far |
Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957) -- Robert Mitchum is a Marine cpl stranded, with a nun, on a Jap infested island during WWII. The nun is played by Deborah Kerr. It's an oldie but goodie.
Dr. Strangelove (1964) -- One of the most hilarious "war" movies ever. About a SAC base commander who goes nuts and launches all his B52s to attack Russia. Peter Sellers plays 3 different roles. Catch 22 (1970) -- Another classic war comedy. Who can forget Bob Newhart as Major Major? Commentary provided for the young whipper snappers who may never have heard of these. [;)] |
In no particular order:
Platoon Braveheart Full Metal Jacket Hamburgur Hill Patton Blackhawk Down |

What was the name of the one Audy Murphy film based on his life? To Hell and Back?
As of late, I have enjoyed films like Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers because they don't go overboard with what alot of action films tend to suffer from. They glorify the people and their acts of heroism and not some computer generated explosions. The effects are good in these films, but the stories hold their ground without them. Hamburger Hill falls into this same category. |
Siege of FireBase Gloria
Boys in Company C Full Metal Jacket Purple Hearts (Glad someone already said that, so I can) Patton Dune (Both versions) Rules of Engagement Predator Aliens Space Marines (Had one of the American Gladiator winners in it) Scott |
How about the other side?
1) Das Boot 2) Cross of Iron 3) Enemy At The Gates |
Siege of Firebase Gloria
Platoon Kelly`s Heroes The Beast Platoon Leader Full Metal Jacket |
What?? Nobody mentioned Pearl Harbor??? What a waste of film that was for the most part.
My list in no particular order: Battle of the Bulge Sands of Iwo Jima Private Ryan Blackhawk Down Dirty Dozen Braveheart The Alamo Full Metal Jacket Band of Brothers Son of Morningstar |
You can't leave out "Hell is for Heroes" with Steve McQueen.
One of the best classics. [devil] |
I like all those mentioned so far. Two of my old favorites are Destination Tokyo and Father Goose. Cary Grant fan. :)
Outside of the recent BHD, Private Ryan or We Were Solders.....
Red Dawn - lots of AK fun. Firebase Gloria was OK Platoon and Full Metal Jacket were too left wing |
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon Heartbreak Ridge Saving Private Ryan Midway Blackhawk Down Hamburger Hill Apocalypse Now Bridge on the river kwai We were soldiers Sooo many.. -T. |
Platoon and Full Metal Jacket were too left wing View Quote Uh, I'll bite... what makes them "left wing"? If they have a slant, I'd call it "war sucks", which any combat veteran will agree with. As Lt. Winters notes in an early episode of "Band of Brothers", (paraphrased) "I vowed that if I lived through this I'd find a quiet piece of land and live the rest of my life in peace." |
Kellys Heroes
Also have to give an honorable mention to John Waynes classic "Fighting Seabees". Gotta love the scene where they run a bulldozer over the Jap postition. |
Currently Blackhawk Down,
That is subject to change, havent seen We Were Soldiers yet. BHD is also the rare case of the movie being better than the book, since they cut out SFC Howes whining about his weapons. Course, in all fairness to the author when the book came out Howe was one of the few who both could and would come out and talk about it at the time. In the 5 years between then and the movie release a lot more people left the service and could be consulted for the movie, resulting in a overall more balanced work, more free from individual biases. |
Ahh, now a better question is: What war movies would you want to see REMADE with the kind of quality that Band of Brothers, Private Ryan, and Blackhawk Down and basicly every other movie that Dale Dye and his people have been involved with?
I'd like to see Hamburger Hill remade, to more closely follow Safiri's book of the same name. I saw the movie after I read the book and BOY was I dissappointed. The Killer Angles, which Ted Turner tried and failed to render to the screen in Gettysburg. I loved it when it came out but watching it again on tape after seeing the latest crop of war movies at the theater makes it look soo cheap... |

MARVL
Compare the honor shown to our soldiers in "We Were Soldiers" to that crap in Platoon. In Platoon the "good guys" were idiot druggies and had no idea of what the war was all about. Remember the battle between the two sergeants? Suppose to represent the fight between the goodness of the poor repressed people and the evil of the harsh American baby killers. Also, that screen with burning the village was sicko crap right out the anti-war movement. Full Metal Jacket was a little more subtle but left wing just the same. All of us enjoyed the drill sergeant but the movie was making fun of him and his job to turn spoiled baby boomers into real fighting men. Joker was anti-war and got his two cents worth in about every other line of dialog. The Battle of Hue was one of the most heroic fights ever endured by the Marines. Wounded Marines were getting their wounds bandaged up and going AWOL from the aid stations to return to their units so as not to let their buddies down. For someone to give a film account of that great battle with that crap I saw in the second half of FMJ was almost criminal! I suppose you thought M*A*S*H was a funny movie about those silly, rolicking GIs who fought in Korea? |

Wow, I didn't think too many people would say "Siege of FireBase Gloria" - DENARDO!!!!
Mine are FMJ and Cross Of Iron. |

Not to sound stentorian or anything, but, I think you response will naturally reflect the age of the poster.
A movie compared to your own experience of the real thing, cannot be anything less than hollow echo. I'm not trying to drag down your thread about Hollywood movies but, do remember, it was you who brought the "war" topic! And Hollywood's is about making money – not normally the realistic portrayl of war, or anything else. "Saving Private Ryan" was good – especially the first 20 mins. "Tunes of Glory" was also very good. And anyone, over 50, will tell you that "Catch 22" was great. But I suspect that that is not want you wanted to hear – is it? I suspect that you would prefer a list of mega-action and mega-rounds, of high-tech, military wiizardry and daring do. If I do you an injustice, seek out and read the following: Read Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et decorem est por Patria Mori" – if you really want to know what it's all about; the grim reality of war that Hollywood would never put on screen. It's all there in a few words, scatched by a soldier in the front lines that cost $0.03. But delivered with poignancy that Hollywood could not reproduce for $300 million. So, sure there are great movies, exciting and blood-boiling – but there are, perhaps, better ways to tell the truth! |

The Audy Murphy movie WAS "To Hell and Back". I forgot another good one, perhaps because I cannot think of the name of it. About Alvin York's journey from consciencious objector to Medal of Honor recipient in the Great War...
Scott |
IMDb to the rescue http://www.imdb.com "Sergeant York", starring Gary Cooper as Alvin York...
Scott |

Thin red line.
Didn't think I would be the 1st to post this but "Apocalypse now" (1979) A new version of this is coming on showtime later this month. Top notch. |
I'd add "The Green Berets" and "Sands of Iwo Jima".
Hey, it's John Wayne, it just doesn't get any more American than that! |

Quoted: Does "Gone With The Wind" qualify? View Quote (edited 'cuz i is an idiot, and thought I read "Wind and the Lion" in the above post. If "Wind and the Lion" had been the movie mentioned, the answer would then be...) Hell Yes!!!! Motivation check, Devil Dogs!!! What could be better that the Marines in their dress uniforms, rifles held at port arms, at a double time march throughout the city, to arrive at the castle, fighting their way in to capture the Sheikh with rifle, pistol and sword!
