A few days ago a newbie asked me how to use the external lock that came with his new semi-auto pistol. (The master lock kind of lock that comes with most guns.)
I honestly had to tell him "I don't know". He said, "All these years of owning guns and you don't know how to use this lock?" I looked at him like  .

With most pistols they are meant to be run through the ejection port and down the mag well with the slide locked back. Before I had a safe I used them on everything but what I was carrying/not left out at night for HD.
