Prosecutor: DeGuzman's plan was mass murder
De Anza College bomb plot trial begins
Painting a picture of a depressed man with a hero-worship of mass murderers, a Santa Clara County prosecutor gave his opening remarks today in the trial of a 20-year-old San Jose resident accused of plotting a Columbine- style attack on De Anza Community College last year.
Deputy District Attorney Thomas Farris told Judge Robert Ahern of Santa Clara County Superior Court that former De Anza student Al DeGuzman had the arsenal and the intent to follow through with an attack on the campus. He would have done so had he not been caught one day before he intended to carry out the assault, the prosecutor said.
"His plan, your honor, was to commit mass murder," Farris said. "He intended to harm and injure as many people as he could."
DeGuzman's attorney, Craig Wormley, followed Farris with an opening statement in which he said DeGuzman was merely fantasizing about an attack and never planned on following through.
