A while ago, I posted about a bright star I saw. Some people mentioned that Jupiter was in view. I checked it out with some 7x binocs and thought that I saw a spec resembling one of its moons.

Last night I had the brilliant idea of using a 20x rifle scope to confirm. WOW. It was CRAZY. I could make out Jupiter and 4 moons very clearly.  It was really a neat sight to behold.

I tried to get pics, but it was impossible to keep the scope/rifle/camera all lined up. In that regard, I fail. I really wanted to give you guys a cool pic, with illuminated mil-dot reticle, Jupiter (god of war?) and its moons.

Spotting scopes are even better, but 20x is hard to beat.

Without looking it up, can you name the four moons in order of distance?  Which one is volcanic, and why?

I was a serious astronomy nerd as a kid, and I still remember all the facts and figures.

Io Europa Ganymede Callisto  Io is volcanic i think its because its interior is being pulled by Jupiter and the other moons.

No.   I really don't know much about astronomy.  I took a college course once, but it was all mathematics about orbits and spin and doppler shift.  I promplty forgot all of it.

I'd like to get into some of the basic astronomy.

Tactical awareness.  It really wasn't the backyard.  It was a blackened room, with the shades parted, and me on the floor, back about 7 yards away from the window.   Perfect hide.

No one saw a damn thing!

You win 7 internets.

Yep, tidal friction heats up Io.  Pretty cool.

The first time I saw the Rings of Saturn were with my Nightforce 8-32x.

It was pretty awesome.  (Found with Google Sky on Droid).

Now Jupiter and it's moons are viewable in the southeast about this time at 40 degrees up or so (depending on where ya live).

NightForce is an AWESOME dual-pupose optic for both astronomy and putting lead where it needs to be.

Need to set up the bipod on the roof of the car or something though.  Way too impossible to hold a bead on a planet.

I love space. On this ATT U-verse we get a bunch of channels and 5 of them have something on space on everyday. It is great.

When you looked at it with binocs the spec was to the right of Jupiter, right?  I'm pretty sure I saw it, although I'm not sure which of the Galilean moons it is.  I tried looking through my telescope but at best Jupiter looked a bit fuzzy (and still white) and I could see none of the moons.

Correct. Jupiter is the roman equivalent to Zeus.

Close enough, I guess.  Zeus liked to come down from Olympus to impregnate human women.

Jupiter comes to meet you.  Does he make you afraid?

Nice.

The clouds here blew over last night and we should have a few nights of fairly clear skies ..........I'll have to break out my spotting scope and do some viewing .

Were pretty remote up here in central Maine so the viewing should be pretty good.
