Two guys shooting mid range. Identical rifles, green and white tiger stripe, stainless bull barrels and the bolts had a very distinctive twist to their action. After shooting 10-15 rnds, they put the bolt in a little belt pouch, and then reloaded the same brass, swabbed the gun, and started over. Is this a type of shooting competition? Never seen it before, full reloading bench right there at the range. Seemed gay so I was not in a hurry to ask WTF....

Seemed gay? The rifles or the belt pouches?

And what the fuck is gay about reloading? I'd love to have a portable loading set-up that I could take to the range.

No, the guys. I reload everything but all the .223 I shoot. The rifles were certainly competition type but I have never seen a twist groove bolt. Very different rifles and why just shoot 10-15 and load the same brass? Thought it was a kind of shoot.

Sounds like pretty normal benchrest type practices to me.  Same rifle configuration may indicate a team.  How did their groups look?

eta: they reload the same brass to get the same result.

One reason would be if it is new brass. Then you fire form to the chamber, reload, then fire for best groups with the once fired brass

They were at 100 yards. Was more concerned with my groups to be honest. Never looked. Never seen reloading same brass there at range. Seems like there would be more variable between the shooters shots than the brass.

They sound like hardcore bench shooters.  The twist on the bolt is decorative (although there are a couple of rifles that use this for arctic performance so the rifle won't freeze shut).  The bolt holster is used so that anyone mastering the range can plainly see the rifle isn't hot, as well as making it a poor choice for theft.

Those are the kind of guys shooting groups in the .00x" range.  They will change the load (at the range) for a change in temperature/humidity/wind/barometric pressure.

btw, did the bolt look like this?

Didn't Ed Brown patent that?
