I'm using a Linksys wiresless router/switch. For the last few days I keep randomly getting disconnected from the internet until i powercycle the router.

Any clues as to what is going on?

Is it an open WIFi point?

are you hardwired when this happens?

Do you download a lot of torrents?

does your computer see it has disconnected and can not get a new ip or can it just not access the internet?

Have you tried to see if a new firmware is available?

Is this a new router/new to you/new but old?

http:/192.168.100.1  Is there anything in your modems log? When you lose your connection what happens?  Can you ping the router?  Can you ping the name servers?

Yeah, it sounds like you're getting randomly disconnected

Here is more detail.

All internet goes, both my 360 (wired) and my laptop (wireless) loose internet, but im not sure if they can accesss the network as my laptop stays connected, but cannot connect to the internet.

I have had the router for almost a year. I used to have a modded firmware with a lot of features but i put the original one back on it. The original firmware has been on it for atleast 6 months. I am not downloading anything. The wireless connection is secure with both a password and MAC filter.

The newest thing in my network would be the Motorolla Modem which i bought so i dont pay per month to the internet company but again i have had that for 4 months and this problem has started within the last week.

To fix it all i do is pull the plug on the router and plug it back in, i dont do anything to the modem or PC's

EDIT: last log entry on the modem is July 22nd, also i stay disconnected from the internet until the router is restarted.

Much lightning out your way the last few days?

Try a hard reset.

If that doesn't do it, or if it craters the device entirely, try flashing it using DD-WRT.  There's even a useful feature in DD-WRT that will let you restart the router automatically on a schedule if the device likes it that way.

If that doesn't do it, or if it craters the device entirely, get a new router.  Cheap wireless routers die A LOT.  There's nothing inherently wrong with the Linksys, I like 'em.  They just don't last any longer than anything else does.

cliffs:  to start anything meaningful you have to see where the failure starts.

When the failure happens do your device and router both show an ip address?

Can you reach the router from your device? (ping your gateway)

Can you resolve names from your device? (ping and nslookup @ your name server)

If you can, where along the route does your dataflow fail? (tracert your.destination)

It sounds like you are in the midst of a dieing router. A year is pretty typical for a retail router, some last longer, many don't last that long.

Assuming your modem isn't dropping out, then it may be time for a router. I think my Linksys is on the way out, it is starting to need reset every couple of days. I have had this one for nearly two years so I am happy. I picked up a Verizon branded Westell broadband router recently for $10 (yes it is only G), so I am ready to go.

Before you shit can your router try and watch your modem before you reset the router, if the modem is cycling or losing sync then replacing the router will not solve your problem.

I have checked the modem before because i was afraid my brand new $100 modem died, but all the lights indicated it was still connected.

As for DD-WRT, for some reason when one PC was to download something my entire internet crawed to a halt. Specifically my brother's laptopl. He would be downloading at 1kbps and every other PC's internet was slower then dial up while his was lightning fast, which is why i dont use that anymore.

If I need a new router so be it, I just got a new laptop with N capabilities anyway!

EDIT:

You mentioned lightning, yes there was a ton of lightning two nights ago. When you say hard reset what do you mean? Hit the reset button on the router, or  shut everything down for a while?

Make sure you don't feed the wood too fast, watch the depth and direction of the cutter

nm, wrong kind of router.

You can always open it up and see if the capacitors are blown/bulged...

Lightning = dead routers.  Try the resets anyway.  Do the hard reset and the 30-30-30 detailed here.

You might call Linksys, see if they'll cover it.  They may very well if you don't mention the lightning.

Sounds like DHCP is forcing lease renewal, only the modem/switch have some issues with renewal.

Take the router out of the loop long enough for you to determine if the problem is the router, or the modem or something further up the line.

I had a real bad issue with disconnect problems in the local area for about 30 days - looked like Comcrap was upgrading their system for higher end speed.

I checked DSL Reports for local activity and found out that they were upgrading the local hardware.

With lightning in the picture, if it was a close strike (say withing 300 yards) there is a good chance you have a fried router. We have been having daily thunderstorms lately and I have been replacing modems and routers like crazy.

Lightning damage if funny, sometimes it will fry everything in the house, sometimes it will only kill your modem and or router. Most often it is the Ethernet port on one or the other that gets zapped, so the lights on the modem or router look fine, but they can't make a connection. Once in a while a piece of equipment will get hit and will still work, sort of, but will have issues (like your dropped connections).

If you are a Comcast customer you may be in luck. In our area you can go to the Comcast office and pick up a wireless N router at no charge.

Naah, he's describing an extremely common mode of failure for his product.  It happens even on wireless bridges with static IP's, and it happens a LOT after power irregularities.  The router itself is seizing up.  It'll run for a bit, then , then run for a bit, then .

Sometimes (rarely), rewriting the firmware with either factory or aftermarket code will fix it permanently, but more likely it'll keep doing it.  If the intervals are decent, like a day or two, DD-WRT resetting automatically every night will mask the issue.  Often the interval will grow shorter over time until it becomes essentially useless, but I've seen one or two last a few years like that now.

Try setting up static IP's on all your computers.

And forget your ISP's DNS servers, use googles there faster and more stable.
