Looking for suggestions (one of my bosses is going to get a boat and I told him a GPS that could show where he is in the Sound (OBX) is a good idea.

So:

Portable GPS.
Waterproof (or at least moderately water resistant...although he'll store it in a dry bag or box).
Capable of loading shoreline maps for North Carolina OBX and Ocean City, MD (and possibly around the Chesapeake).

And:

Able to load maps for him to go hunting and (if possible) traffic maps.

He doesn't want the fanciest stuff...just a basic unit for emergencies.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Garmin 400t or I think it is up to the 450t now but they come fully loaded with all road and terrain maps.  They also have a feature where you can purchase ocean maps or even buy it pre-loaded with them.  You can also buy a subscription for like $30 for a year and get sattelite imagery on the unit.

All of mine are Garmin, I won't buy another brand.

Having said that, you are getting in to the $300 dollar range when you get them with a MicroSD slot, like I have to have to load land ownership maps for hunting.

I've got a Vista HCX and really like it.  It will run all day on one set of NiMh batteries.

I'm using the Garmin Colorado 300C for work. Most of my coworkers use the CSX (I believe it is). Colorado is good, but the thumbwheel takes some getting used to.

Look into Delorme.

The available maps are outstanding and you can download all you want (Sat/Topo/USGS) for $30 a year.

ETA: Just noticed you boss is going to use it for boating also...the downloads also included NOAA nautical charts.

I use a little Etrex on my dual purpose bike.  I use it more to find out where I am than to find where I'm going.  I bungee it to the top of my brake master cylinder.  It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

He showed me a pic....looked to me like a Carolina Skiff type boat (not real big....like a bigger center console Jon Boat)...going to be more on the Shenandoah River, Delaware, around Ocean City, MD...and possibly the OBX.    Probably not out of site of land, but enough to do some fishing.....I gather it's more so when he gets done fishing he can figure out if he's 5 miles south or north of the boat ramp without too much trouble.

Garmin 400t. Love mine here is a link for more 400t info.

http://gpsinformation.info/penrod/oregon/oregon.html

Main reason I did not go for the Colorado is because it is not a true touch screen. All input is done through the thumb wheel. The Oregon's are true touch screen. I picked mine up for $325.00 2 years ago which was a steal.

Sometimes Tiger GPS has refurbished units. There are many website around that have comparisons of popular models. There is no shortage of GPS info out there, unlike this site for AR's the info is spread over many forums.

What is the point of this??.  Wether or not the OP can read a map is irrelevant to this thread.
