I'm a 23 year old living in NY state who is getting ready to go back to college for the next 2 years.  This was completely unexpected and has put me in a bit of a bind.  I have a pistol permit, and have 4 handguns on it.  I also own a few shotguns, rifles (family inheritance) and an AR15.  Obviously, I can't bring these with me on campus since that would land me in a world of trouble.  The problem comes in the fact that my parents have conveniently let me know one month before going away to school they do not want the guns stored at the house while I am at school for the next 2 years..

I was hoping someone would be able to offer up some advice on whether or not there exists a storage situation for handguns and rifles/shotguns?  My first thought was whether it is even legal to, for example, rent out a "24-Hour Self Storage" unit, put a gun safe in it and store them there?  I can't see why it would be illegal, but living in NY, I am a bit weary of doing something without knowing beforehand if it is legal.  This is pretty much the only solution I have been able to think up, and was hoping someone could provide some insight into the legality of this, or perhaps offer a better solution?  The main concern is with the handguns, the rifles and shotguns can always be stored at my uncles house, though I would prefer to have them all local to me so I can go to the range and all that good stuff.

Any input is greatly appreciated, I don't want to have to sell all these guns off, and potentially lose my permit (having no guns on it), just because of a problem finding storage for them.

I can think of a few options:  Check and see if the university has storage available.  I work at the Southern Illinois University Police Department and we off free storage for students.   For the handguns how about a safe deposit box at a bank?
The small 24 hour monthly storage is also an option, but I'd buy a gun safe and bolt it down and use a disc lock on the storage door.

Can't hurt to check with the school. Many campus police departments are willing to storage firearms for students. Granted you have to let you guns with campus police monkeys, but it's better than nothing and it's free.

Have you thought about living off campus at all?

Most of the time it is often cheaper or about the same price as living in the university dorms.

Go to a school that lets you keep them in the dorms? My first university still allows that.

I know at my University you can have the PD store your guns. I never did.

Why not talk to your parents, see why they dont want the guns there. Maybe you could lock them up, take the bcg out of the AR...render them unoperable.

OR just hide them in the house somewhere...lol

Thanks for the ideas, for some reason it never occurred to me to just check with the school.  I don't imagine I'll get very far that way, due to NY laws, but it's always worth a shot.  As for why they don't want the guns, they never wanted me to have them in the first place, but when my grandfather on my dad's side died, he handed down all his guns to me, so it was kinda a forced thing.  As for living off campus, I get a full ride to live on campus, so it would be significantly more expensive to live off campus, though I may choose to do that next year if this turns out to be a real hassle.  Thanks for the ideas though, going to call up the school tomorrow and see how far I get with that.  I am still leaning towards the self storage option, since I'll have 24 hour access to them (24 hour range out there), as long as that's not illegal.

If you go to a SUNY school, they have storage on campus. They might not know it,but they have to store your
firearms for you.
I stored guns for a friend for a year or two till he found out that they have to offer him storage.
He kept AR's and AK's on campus.

Some storage places forbid the storing of firearms and ammo.  I hope they don't ever get into mine and mess with my ammo.

Learn to hide them? Buy a large shop vac and Hide your handguns inside. strip the rifles and shotguns down and find a place to hide the parts.

Check with the local PD. Many university PDs will store guns for students.

does your scholarship refund any money to you that you dont spend?  i know my scholarships at the university of houston would gimme money back.  if so, use funds for off campus housing.  id get a safe and bolt it down though.  maybe you can hide your guns under empty pizza boxes and crust and empty beer boxes.

Mine does as well.

Granted I made the mistake of using it and having campus PD call the ATF about an AK I stored with them AFTER they accepted it.

My college offered the same thing.  They would store for free there, it was just a PITA sometimes if you wanted to go get them quickly.  They would have to call a sgt in from patrol to come open the storage area. Sometimes they made it to the station in 2 min sometimes 45min.

That or live off campus, rent a storage unit, or have a friend you lives off campus that you trust hold on to them (i did this for a bit too, but he was one of my best friends and shooting buddies)

If the PD is willing to store your hardware for free go for it. When my daughter was in college, someone "broke" into her and stole their valuables, ie lap top guitar etc etc.

Get the smallest storage unit, buy 2x4s and some drywall and make a fake wall in your storage unit. Keep other shit infront of the wall at all times.. If someone dose happend to break into your storage unit, there wont be a large gunsafe screaming break into me....
