I lived in Miami for about 7 years- great coffee and good cigars..... Be careful of the gang activity when at the South Beach area and stay away from Carol city and little Haiti. Fun place to live

When I was a kid back in the 60s/70s, most of the neighbors in the building were Cubans who had fled Castro.  The first generation usually are hardcore like their parents.  Having never lived true oppression, the 2nd generation not so much because of the public indoctrination they get in our schools.

Cuban Sammich!

Cuba Libre to wash it down.  Superior to the rum-n-coke.
(not surprisingly it is considered a bit of a faux pas to make a Cuba Libra with Cuban Havana Club)

As an American born of Cuban parents who escaped to America in the immediate aftermath of Castro's "revolution", I'd have to agree with this.

Also, even though I lived there for 8.5 years, I find Miami to be an intolerable shithole.

If there is an official sammich of Heaven, it is, in fact, the Cubano.

I've been experimenting with pressed, Cubano-style burgers on grillin' out days.  Very very good.  (Burger patty, ham, mustard, pickle, optional chipotle aioli, Cuban bread, pressed between two hot cast iron skillets)

The first thing that came to my mind was the Cuban sandwich.  In fact, that's what I thought this thread was going to be about when I read the title.

Oh, a local pizza joint did a Cuban sandwich pizza one summer, awesome.

Otherwise, I dunno.  I haven't been to south Florida since the early 70's.

DELICIOUS food!!!!  Must try fresh cuban bread, black beans, yellow rice, fried yucca.  The black beans and yellow rice is best served with lime on it.

My dad's side of the family is cuban.  My great grandparent came over on a boat to Key West.  Five generations of my family were born and raised in Key West.  The thing I miss most about being around cuban people is the food!

I live here in South Florida most of the year. Summer in NJ for work.

I have a Cuban 21 year old PA. She's cute, smart, a college student, and has conservative Christian parents. She's 2nd generation, speaks no Spanish, and is a typical American in every way.

While years ago, there were problems with Cuban criminals in the drug world. That's a thing of the distant past, just like the crooked Irish cops in NYC. (and was also a small percentage of the population). Today, the Cuban culture is very favorable.

From my point of view, most Cubans work very hard at making a better life for themselves here in the USA. Unlike some facets of the American population who feel entitled.

I am going to give the Cubans here an "A" rating.

Miami is awesome.  The women are hotter than anyplace you'll find.  The Cubans are just a bonus.  They are hard-working decent people.  By now many are 2nd, 3rd & 4th generation Americans that are VERY proud of this Country.

Love the sammiches, black beans and the Mohitos.

Relax and enjoy the place!

The only thing I hate about Miami is the constant around the clock traffic jams, but it has nothing to do with any Cubans.

North or south outskirts?

An area called Westchester.

My former in-laws live there. It's about as nice an area you can get in Miami and still be reasonably affordable.

Oh, and Westchester is hardly "the outskirts" of Miami. When I lived there, I was at 132nd Ave and SW 8th St. Back then, the Everglades bumped right up against that area. Now it is all developed as far out as Krome Ave.

Let's see....

- If you need education, FIU is right around the corner.
- There used to be a Latin America Cafeteria on the corner of Coral Way and 97th Ave. Sadly, it closed, but there is another place there that makes decent Cuban sandwiches.
- Versailles is nice to visit once. ONCE. It's a tourist trap.
- Any "La Carreta" restaurant will serve decent Cuban food. Another great traditional place is called "Las Esquina De Tejas" (The Corner of Tiles - so named because of the tiled roof). Reagan ate there and they are STILL damned proud of that!
- For shopping, you have Dadeland Mall south of you and The Falls down in Kendall. Both have all you'll need. There is also Dolphin Mall (with a Bass Pro Shops) over by where the Turnpike and 836 meet.
- Assuming it's still there, you can drop by Lou's Gun Shop in Hialeah. Good folks (back when I was there).
- Gun shows go at the convention center near CocoWalk or at the Memorial Auditorium (or whatever it's called) in Fort Lauderdale. Meh.
- Publix is everywhere. Definitely one thing I miss about Florida.
- Do not, under any circumstances, buy anything immediately north of Calle Ocho (Sweetwater). The place is prone to horrible flooding under the best of circumstances, and I doubt the local .gov has fixed it.

Outskirts ?
Most of us who've lived here decades would be hard-pressed to call Westchester "the outskirts" as Miami has expanded so far to the West.
It certainly WAS at one time.  Guess it's a matter of perspective.
